조선 후기 <무목왕졍튱녹>의 번역․제작과 그 의도 (Purpose of translation and production of in the late Chosun Dynasty)

초록

본고는 중국 明代 熊大木이 지은 『大宋中興通俗演義』가 조선에 유입되어 英祖代에 <무목왕졍튱녹>이라는 국문소설로 번역․필사되어 제작된 경위를 탐색하면서, 『大宋中興通俗演義』가 국내에 수용될 수 있었던 배경, <무목왕정튱녹>의 제작 시기와 과정, 그리고 이를 주도했던 제작 주체의 의도 등을 살펴보았다.
『大宋中興通俗演義』가 국내에 수입될 수 있었던 것은 여말선초부터 악비 관련 고사와 인물 형상이 지속적으로 수용․확산되어 이를 받아들이고 이해할 수 있는 문학적 토양이 형성되어 있었기 때문이다. <무목왕졍튱녹>을 국문으로 번역하여 제작하는 일에는 暎嬪李氏가 깊이 관여하였고 그 결과 ‘暎嬪房印’이라는 소장인이 찍힌 채로 낙선재로 들어갈 수 있었던 것이다. <무목왕졍튱녹>은 주인공 악비의 모습을 통해 ‘忠’의 이념을 강조하는 한편, <어졔제문>을 통해 일정부분 남편인 영조의 정치적 의도와 행보를 뒷받침하기 위한 책이었을 가능성이 크다. 따라서 <무목왕졍튱녹>은 단순히 흥미 오락을 위한 궁중 여인들의 독서물에 그치는 것이 아님을 시사한다.

영어초록

This study was started from the critical mind that there is a need to prove that the introduction and translation of China’s novels are not just for cultural obedience or entertainment. To that end, this study examined the process of introduction of 『Daesongjungsongjungheungtongsokyeoneui(大宋中興通俗演義)』, a novel of Ming era and its translation and production into <Mumokwangjeongtyungnok>. And it also examined the background where 『Daesongjungsongjungheungtongsokyeoneui』 was accepted into Korea, production period and process of <Mumokwangjeongtyungnok>, and the intention of Yeongbin Lee who led the production. This may be just one of the cases, but this study is meaningful in that it examined a specific case where a Chinese novel of the later period of Joseon was translated and produced in Korea.
The main purposes of this study are like the following.
The reason that 『Daesongjungsongjungheungtongsokyeoneui』 was intro- duced into Korea was that from the end of Goryeo to the 18th century, foundation of literature was created for accepting and understanding this, because ancient history and figures related to ‘Akbi(岳飛)’ were consistently accepted and spread.
In translating and producing <Mumokwangjeongtyungnok>, Yeongbin Lee was deeply involved, and practically supported the work by mobilizing human resources and money. Therefore, it was possible that the book of large volume was translated and produced in the hands of experts within a short period quickly. As a result, <Mumokwangjeongtyungnok> was able to be entered into Nakseonjae(樂善齋) with ‘暎嬪房印’stamped on it.
<Mumokwangjeongtyungnok> emphasized the idea of ‘loyalty(忠)’ through the main character Akbi, and it is highly likely that the book was partly intended to support the political intention and behaviors of Yeongjo(英祖), the husband. This suggests that this book is more than just a book of entertainment for women in a palace.
