초록

Na Do-gyu was a scholar out of office from Gwangju, Jeolla Province. He left two travel books after his two trips to Mt. Mudeung, the guardian mountain of Gwangju, along with his friends. He went on a trip to the mountain in 1868 and 1870. After the first trip, he determined to take the second one because the first trip hardly covered a half of the sights and because the guide was ignorant about the origins and histories of the natural features. He included the origins and histories of the sights he visited in his travel books for later reference. They are important data to broaden the understanding of Mt. Mudeung and read his various perspectives of the world as an intellectual since they contain information not known before and further his own impressions and opinions. Most of all, his travel books contain his perceptions of the Gwangju community. He regarded Gwangju where he was born and raised as a community that produced a lot of great figures. Given that he emphasized a rock with no stain as the best scenery of Gwangju, he must have seen Gwangju figures as such a type of figures. He scolded those who engraved their names in rocks uselessly, calling them fools. However, he made no mention of Gwangju people, which suggests that he must have thought them to be reasonable. He believed that the spirit and energy of Mt. Mudeung was behind the large number of pure and reasonable figures born in Gwangju, accordingly worrying about the disappearance of thick pine forests. He was afraid that the disappearance of pine trees would lead to the damaged spirit and energy of Mt. Mudeung and the disappearance of pure and reasonable figures.
