음양오행으로 본 처용무의 구성 원리 (Principles composition of Cheoyongmu based on Yin-Yang and the Five Elements)

초록

음양오행사상은 조화와 통일을 강조한 세계관으로 한민족의 민속예술 또는 한국사상사에 있어 철학적, 윤리적 내지 종교적 차원에서 최고의 원리로 인식되고 있다. 이러한 음양오행사상은 우리의 사고유형의 기반을 이루고 있어 문화에도 영향을 미쳤으며 무용에도 지대한 영향을 끼쳐 다양한 형태의 무용에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. 궁중무용의 하나인 처용무는 신라 말 제49대 헌강왕 때에 발생되어 오늘날까지 추어지고 있는 역사가 가장 오래된 궁중가면무로서, 현재 중요무형문화재 제 39호로 지정되어 다양한 사상과 내용, 기능을 시대에 따라 수용, 변용 시켜 가면서 어느 시대에서도 그 중요성을 잃지 않고 전승되어 온 대표적인 궁중무용이다. 처용무에 영향을 끼친 음양오행사상의 관점에서 해석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 처용무는 의식무에 적합한 음양오행론적 의미와 목적성을 지니며 처용무의 공간구성에서 두드러지게 나타나는 음양오행적 대형은 일렬작대(一列作隊)․좌선회무(左旋回舞)․오방작대(五方作隊) 등이 있다. 둘째, 춤의 구성이나 의상 등에 동양철학사상이 내재되어 엄격한 격식과 질서를 바탕으로 형성되어 절제미를 느낄 수 있으며 의물의 사용과 배열도 음양오행에 의해 이루어졌다. 셋째, 처용무는 자연적 순환의 원리를 그대로 나타낸 무용으로 동, 서, 남, 북의 방향과 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울의 자연 순리에 따라 대형이 만들어져 오방 처용무로서 통일성과 안정성, 균형을 통해 시각적인 조화를 이루고 있다.

영어초록

The philosophy of 'Yin-Yang and the Five Elements(umyang ohaeng)' which highlights harmony and unification is perceived as one of the most profound principles in the Korean folk arts and philosophical developments in regards to philosophical, ethical, and religious dimensions. The philosophy of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements is based on the thought patterns of the Korean and it subsequently influenced culture and dance. Cheoyongmu(Dance of Cheoyong) is one of the court dances and it originated from the reign of Heongang, the 49th king in late Silla. It is the oldest court mask dance that has been well preserved and being practiced to date. As the 39th important intangible cultural asset, it is a living representative court dance of Korea which continuously adopted and modified itself depending on various philosophies, contents, and functions of different epoches. It has maintained its significance and values throughout the changes of time. Based on the review of the origin and changes of Cheoyongmu, and interpretation from the perspective of the Yin-Yang and the Five Elements which influenced the dance, the following results are withdrawn. First, meanings and objectives of Cheoyongmu are matched with those of the Yin-Yang and the Five Elements suitable for the ceremonial dance. A spatial composition of Cheoyongmu significantly resembles alignments and arrangements of the Yin-Yang and the Five Elements including one line alignment, left rotation dance, and five sides(directions) dance. Second, composition and costume of the dance inherently embrace the Eastern philosophy and subsequently it imposes the aesthetic of restrain based on strict rules and order. The use and arrangement of the props are also based on the Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Third, Cheoyongmu is a dance which expresses the cycle of nature in its purest form of which dance arrangement is made following four directions of east, west, south, and north and four seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter. Consequently the four directions(sides) plus the center of Cheoyongmu provide a visual harmony based on unification, stability, and balance.
