초록

본고는 민속신앙을 기반으로 창작한 한국 현대 무속시에 나타난 폭력적 이미지를 탐구하였다. 살펴본 한국 현대 무속시는 신과 인간의 현실 세계와 초월적 세계를 반영하면서 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간, 인간과 세계에 대한 폭력적 이미지를 무속시로 승화시킨다. 이 폭력성은 일제 강점기와 해방 이후의 혼란, 그리고 한국전쟁과 군사독재, 민주화 과정 등을 거치면서 사회적인 영향을 받았던 것으로 파악된다.
첫째 김춘수의 ‘처용’이 보여주는 무속시는 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁을 거치면서 직접 목격하거나, 체험한 역사적 폭력 앞에서 상처를 치유하는 ‘성소의 장소’로 기능하고 있다. 이것은 순수한 것에 대한 불순함의 ‘정화적 효과’를 가지며, 보편적인 건강과 풍요한 생명력을 갖는 것으로, 불순에서 순수로 끊임없이 상승하고자 하는 태도를 보인다. 그는 처용을 통해 비극적인 역사 속에서 유년기부터 겪어온 절망감, 공포심, 비극성, 억울함, 성폭력, 성적 수치심, 순결과 동경, 비호감 등에 관한 ‘폭력적인 억압’을 ‘해갈’할 수 있게 된다.
둘째 고정희의「초혼제」에서 현전하는 무속시는 현실에 대한 죽음과 절망, 비극적인 상황을 집단적인 ‘마당굿’으로 순화시킨다. 이른바 기독교 예배 의식과 민족 정서로 결합된 초혼제는 통일을 향한 ‘마당굿’을 벌이면서 군부독재시절에 민주․민족․통일을 위하여 투쟁하다가 죽어간 영혼들의 넋을 불러온다. 마당굿은 대동의 차원에서 민중의 아픔을 기독교와 민속신앙으로 융합시킨 ‘마당극’ 형태로 ‘개인적인 정한’을 ‘민족적인 정한’으로 확대시키고 있다.
셋째 신경림과 김지하의 무속시는 군사독재 앞에서 자유민주주를 위하여 죽어간 영혼들을 위해 ‘씻김굿의 제의성’을 보인다. 시적 배경에는 지배층이 힘없는 민중을 지배하고 통제하기 위한 수단으로 정치적 폭력, 경제적 폭력, 비윤리적 폭력 등 인간 존엄성과 가치를 파괴하는 여러 유형의 폭력성을 보이는데, 공통적으로 시대적인 부정성에서 연유한다. 독재정권으로부터 천대받고 억울하게 죽은 민중은 ‘길 위의 영매자’ 혹은 ‘영매로서의 애린’으로 형상화된다. 씻김굿은 떠도는 원귀들을 위해 주문과 기도를 외우는 ‘제의적 형태’로 드러나며 망자에 대한 ‘억울한 심상’을 치환하며 위무하고 있다.
살펴본 시인들이 체험한 시대 상황의 폭력적 이미지를 무속시로 투사하면서 그로 인한 정신적 억압과 좌절을 표출하는 시적 방법을 살펴보았다. 무속시는 무속신앙을 매개로 억압된 감정을 보인다는 점에서 그 생성과 소멸을 함께하고 있다. 이것은 시인이 체득한 시대적․역사적 사건에 대해 해결되지 못한 트라우마와 콤플렉스를 무속시로 승화하고 있다.
