초록

武松의 이야기는 『수호전』 중에서도 가장 인기가 높았던 부분이다. 이 글은 70회본 『수호전』에서 武松이 주역으로 활약하는 22회～31회를 중심으로, 무송에 대한 金聖嘆의 평가가 지닌 비평적 의의를 탐색한 논문이다. 김성탄은 『史記列傳』에 근거를 두고, 한 인물의 傳記로 『수호전』을 이해하였다. 이는 각 개인의 인물 이야기에 근원을 두고 있는 『수호전』의 장르 속성하고도 부합된다. 이는 『수호전』의 인물에 대한 개별적 조명이 그만큼 손쉬움을 뜻한다. 김성탄은 『수호전』의 여러 인물 중에서도 무송을 가장 높게 평가했다. 그는 무송이 여타 인물들의 장점을 모두 갖추었다고 하였다. 김성탄이 무송을 높게 평가한 근거는 무엇일까? 흩어져 있는 김성탄의 평어를 종합해보면 그 대답을 얻을 수 있다. 용력이 출중하고 성격이 진솔하며 복수를 위해 손수 사람을 죽인 것은 무송이나 다른 호한들이나 다를 바 없다. 하지만 그는 거칠고 진솔한 데 그치지 않고, 반듯함과 치밀함과 총명함과 인자함과 忠良함을 두루 갖추었다. 억울하게 죽은 형의 원수를 갚아 개인적인 윤리를 다했고, 그 직후 관가에 자수하여 사회적인 차원에서도 법질서를 멸시하지 않았다. 김성탄은 『수호전』을 두고 시종 ‘윤리와 법질서 / 분노와 폭력’ 사이에서 고민하였으며, 때로는 자기모순적인 태도를 보여주었다. 무송의 처지는 김성탄의 고민을 대변하며, 무송의 행위는 김성탄의 고민을 풀어준다. 이성적으로는 유가적 사회질서를 통째로 부정하지 못하면서도, 본능적으로는 그 질서의 부조리와 모순에 대한 즉각적이고 폭력적인 해결을 고무했던, 문사 김성탄의 이중적인 심리는 무송에게서 이지러짐 없는 兩存의 가능성을 발견했던 것이다. 한편 김성탄은 무송에게서, 뛰어난 능력을 지니고도 사회에 쓰이지 못하는 불우한 지사의 모습도 발견했다. 김성탄처럼 『사기열전』의 미학 관점으로 볼 때, 22～31회의 武十回는 뛰어난 용력을 지니고도 써주는 사람을 만나지 못해 사회적으로 타락해가는 한 인물의 비극적 이야기가 된다.

영어초록

Wu Song(武松)’s story is one the most favorite parts in the “Heroes of the Marshes.” This article viewed the significance of Jin Shengtan’s criticism on Wu Song, mainly throughout the chapters from 22 to 31 in which Wu Song is described as the main character in the “Heroes of the Marshes” with the seventy chapter version. Jin Shengtan viewed the “Heroes of the Marshes” as a biography of a certain person based on the “History Records · Biographies.” This corresponds with the genre characteristics of the “Heroes of the Marshes” which is based on the stories of each particular figure. This means that it is quite easy to have a respective study on each figure in the “Heroes of the Marshes.” Jin Shengtan estimated Wu Song as the best one among all the figures in “Heroes of the Marshes.” He mentioned that Wu Song is equipped with all the merits of other figures. What is the basis of such a high estimation of Jin Shengtan on Wu Song? By integrating the scattered points of Jin Shengtan’s criticism we can get the answer. In regards of having excellent strength with frank characteristics and killing others for revenge, he is not that different than other fine figures. However, his personality is not only being wild and frank but also being straight, precise, wise, kind, loyal, and honest. He was faithful in his personal ethics by revenging for his brother’s victimized death and he honored the legal order of the society by immediately turning himself into authorities. Jin Shengtan was constantly troubled between ‘ethics and legal order’ and ‘wrath and violence’ in regard of the “Heroes of the Marshes” and sometimes he even contradicted to himself. Wu Song’s situation speaks for the trouble of Jin Shengtan and Wu Song’s behavior solves the trouble of Jin Shengtan. Jin Shengtan had a double-faced psychology for not being able to totally deny the Confucian social order, in his reason, but wishing to seek an immediate and violent way of solution against the disorder and contradiction of the society in his instinct. Then he found the possibility of the co-existence of both aspects in the case of Wu Song. In the meanwhile, Jin Shengtan even discovered Wu Song as an unlucky loyalist who was not used for the society regardless of his excellent capabilities. As Jin Shengtan’s case, if we view ‘Wu Shi Hui’ of chapters 22 to 31 with the aesthetics view point of the “History Records․Biographies” then this account is regarded as a tragic story of a figure who is being socially corrupted since he was not able to meet anybody using him regardless of his excellent strength.
