원삼국~한성백제기 중부지방 옹관묘의 조영 양상과 변천- 분묘군 내에서의 조영 양상을 중심으로 - (The Construction Method and Development of Jar-coffin Burials from the Central Region Dating from the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to the Hanseong Baekje Period - Focusing on the Construction of Jar-co)

초록

이 글은 중부지방에서 확인된 원삼국시대와 한성백제기의 분묘 유적에서 옹관묘가 조영되는 양상을 파악하기 위하여 작성되었다. 옹관묘는 관련 묘제를 고려하여 서해안권(Ⅰ), 아산만 동부권(Ⅱ). 경기남부권(Ⅲ), 한강중류권(Ⅳ), 남한강권(Ⅴ)의 5개 지역권으로 나누어 볼 수 있다.
옹관묘는 분묘군과의 상관관계에 따라 다음의 5가지 유형으로 설정된다. 즉 분묘군과 관련없이 독립적으로 조영된 것(1유형), 분묘군 내부에 조영된 것(2유형), 개별 무덤과의 관련성을 지니면서 가장자리에 위치한 것(3유형), 개별 무덤 가까이에 조영된 것(4유형), 개별 무덤 묘광 안에 들어온 것(5유형)이다. 또한 옹관의 형식은 주옹으로 사용된 토기 형식(기종)을 기준으로 다음의 4가지 형식으로 분류된다. 즉 연질대옹(A형식), 중도식무문토기(B형식), 장란형토기(C형식), 경질중형호(D형식)의 4가지이다.
옹관묘의 시기와 지역에 따른 조영 양상은 다음과 같이 요약된다. 먼저 원삼국시대에는(1·2단계) 분묘군 내에서 개별 무덤과의 관련성을 지니면서 조영되기 시작하고, 이후 한성백제기에는(3~5단계) 개별 무덤 안으로 이동하여 양상을 나타낸다. 다음으로 옹관묘는 서해안권(Ⅰ지역)이나 아산만동부권(Ⅱ지역)에서 초기 유적들이 집중되어 있다. 이는 옹관묘가 아산만 주변에서 경기 내륙지역으로 파급된 것을 보여준다. 중도식토기문화 중심권(Ⅳ·Ⅴ지역)에서는 원삼국시대까지 옹관묘가 조영되지 않았으나 한성백제기의 이후부터 옹관묘가 확인되고 있다. 이는 백제문화가 주변으로 파급되는 것과 관련된다.
결국 옹관묘와 관련 분묘의 상관성이 높아지는 양상은 옹관묘의 피장자가 조영집단의 구성원으로서의 지위가 강화되는 정황을 반영하는 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

This paper aims to consider how the Jar-coffin burials of the Proto-Three Kingdoms to Hanseong Baekje period found in the central region of the Korean Peninsula were constructed. An examination of the jar-coffin burials in association with the related burial tradition illustrates that the five regional zones can be established for the tombs: the west coast zone (Ⅰ), the east Asan Bay zone (Ⅱ), the south Gyeonggi zone (Ⅲ), the Han River midstream zone (Ⅳ), and the Namhan River zone (Ⅴ).
The jar-coffin burials can be divided into 5 different assemblage styles according to their relationship with other burial types within the burial ground: independently constructed jar-coffin burials not associated with any burial ground (Style 1), jar-coffin burials located within a burial ground (Style 2), jar-coffin burials associated with other burials and found at a peripheral position (Style 3), jar-coffin burials found near other burials (Style 4), jar-coffin burials found within their own pits (Style 5). According to the type of jar used as the coffin, the jar-coffin burials can be divided into 4 types: large soft earthenware jars (Type A), jungdo type plain pottery jars (Type B), long bodied jars (Type C), and middle-sized stoneware jars (Type D).
The construction trend of jar-coffin burials can be summarized by period and area. In the Proto-Three Kingdoms period (Phase 1-2), they were gradually constructed in relation to other burials. Later in the Hanseong Baekje period (Phase 3-5), they came to buried in their own pit graves. Jar-coffin burials are seen to have spread to the Gyeonggi inland region from the east Asan Bay zone since many of the early sites are intensively distributed in the west coast zone (Ⅰ) or the the east Asan Bay zone (Ⅱ). In the central sphere of the Jungdo type Pottery Culture (Ⅳ, Ⅴ), jar-coffin burials were not used during the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, only making an appearance from the Hanseong Baekje Period. This adopting of the jar-coffin burial is thought to be connected to extension of Baekje culture.
The increase in the correlation between jar-coffin burials and other types of burials can be seen to reflect an increase in the social status of the deceased that was buried within the jar-coffin burials.
