조선후기 동관왕묘 건축의 원형 복원 연구 - 건물의 개수와 시설의 변천을 중심으로 - (A Study on Restoring the Original Form of Donggwanwangmyo Buildings in the Late Joseon Dynasty - focused on the reconstruction of building and the Improvement of Fɑcilities -)

초록

동관왕묘(東關王廟)는 1602년 조선 국왕과 명 황제가 주도하여 한중 절충 양식으로 창건한 이후, 관우의 충의를 기리고자 동관왕묘를 수리하였다. 19세기 고종대에 동관왕묘에는 관우를 모신 정전과 동서무, 삼중의 문, 제사를 위한 전사청(典祀廳)과 재실(齋室), 어막대(御幕臺) 등 여러 채의 건물과 시설이 갖춰져 있었다. 일제강점기에 관우신앙이 탄압을 받아 동관왕묘는 점차 쇠퇴하였고, 1973년 서울특별시가 여기에 공원을 조성하면서 많이 훼손되었다. 본고는 동관왕묘가 원형 복원되길 기대하며 조선후기의 수개과정을 다음과 같이 정리하였다.
첫째, 동관왕묘 건물의 위계와 의물을 복원해야 한다. 정전에는 신앙의 대상인 관우상을 비롯한 조각들과 회화들이 배치되었으나, 벽화 등 일부 회화가 훼철되었다. 또 정전과 동서무는 높이의 차이가 있었으나 공원화되면서 전체 바닥면이 약1.0m 정도 높아져 정전과 다른 건물들의 위계가 맞지 않고, 계단 앞 용머리나 신어로[神御路] 등이 제자리를 찾지 못하고 있다. 특히 조선 국왕이 머물렀던 어막대는 화장실로 사용되면서 원형 훼손 뿐 아니라 조선의 권위를 참담하게 만들고 있다.
둘째, 동관왕묘는 관우에게 제사를 드리는 사묘의 특성이 복원되어야 한다. 동관왕묘의 본래 기능을 회복하기 위해서는 제향을 준비하던 전사청과 제관(祭官)이 숙박을 했던 재실이 마련되어야 한다. 이곳은 조선의 국왕이 왕릉에 갈 때 군사 의식[軍禮]을 거행했던 의례 공간이었다. 관우의 의리를 생각하고 군인들의 충성을 이끌기 위해 국왕이 머물렀던 어막대 또한 그 기능을 되살려야 한다. 이처럼 현존하지 않는 건물이나 시설은 조선시대의 원형에 맞춰 복원되어야 한다.

영어초록

Donggwanwangmyo shrine is a historic symbol of remembering "Jeongyujaeran" (2nd Japan's invasion of Korea). The shrine was established in eclecticism style of Korea and China in 1602, which was led by the King of Joseon Dynasty and Emperor Ming. Since then, the Kings of Joseon repaired the shrine to honor a sense of royalty of Guan Yu. In the 19th century when Emperor Gojong reigned, Donggwanwangmyo had a lot of buildings and facilities such as a shrine with triple doors in and outside the building and T-type pillar in the center, a long building from east to west, Jeonsacheong(memorial service for ancestors), Jaesil(ritual house), a pond, Eomakttae(御幕臺), etc. As Japan suppressed the deification of Guan Yu during the Japanese occupation, Donggwanwangmyo was gradually in decline. However, it was in 1973 when Donggwanwangmyo started to lose its original form. Then, Seoul City started to construct a park in the place where Donggwanwangmyo was. This study researched how Donggwanwangmyo could be restored and its findings are as follows.
First, as the floor of Donggwanwangmyo was getting higher, space hierarchy and quality got modified. Jeongjeon(main building) is the building where the statue of Guan Yu was enshrined and located on the topmost and the most important building in Donggwanwangmyo. However, from the main building to the gate, the whole floor surface is more than 1.5 meter higher than before and thus the main building and other ones stand at the same height. Accordingly, dragon head and Sineoro(神御路) are not in place, which are supposed to be placed on the stairway in front of main building. What is worse, Eomakttae is used as a rest room, ruining the authority of Joseon Dynasty as well as its original form.
Second, Donggwanwangmyo is a private shrine holding a memorial service for Guan Yu. In order to restore it original function, Jeonsacheong for sacrificial rite and Jaesil for officials' lodging need to be restored. Furthermore, Donggwanwangmyo is the place where the King of Joseon held a military ceremony whenever he visited royal tombs. Eomakttae should also be restored in its functions, where the King stayed to honor a sense of royalty of Guan Yu and emphasize a sense of fidelity from soldiers. Thus, the buildings and facilities, which are not existed, should be restored in accordance to the original form of Joseon Dynasty.
