포항 옥성리고분군 암광묘의 축조와 그 배경 (Invention of the Rock Pit Tombs of Okseong-ri, Pohang, and its Background)

초록

본고는 포항 옥성리 일대 고분군 ‘암광 묘제’의 편년, 구조, 분포 등을 검토하고, 물질문화가 다양한 맥락 속에서이루어진 개인(들)의 능동적인 전략과 행위를 통해 생성되었다는 관점에서 접근하였다. 이를 통해 암광 묘제의축조 배경과 무덤 구조의 상이성에 대해 고찰하고, 고분군 축조 집단의 내부구조와 동향을 추론해 보았다.
분석 결과, 암광 묘제는 5세기 4/4분기에서 6세기 2/4분기까지 성행하였으며, 기존에 축조되던 수혈식묘제에 횡혈식 혹은 횡구식 묘제와 암광 요소 등이 복합되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 현상은 당시 흥해 일대의 정세 변동과 그로 인해 촉발된 불안정한 사회 환경, 그들이 인지하고 경험해 온 지역의 지질 환경 등에그 배경이 있는 것으로 생각된다. 집단 구성원들은 그러한 배경에서 토착 사회의 통합과 집단 내부의 안정을목적으로 암광 묘제라는 전통을 만들어 낸 것으로 판단된다.
아울러 암광 묘제는 횡혈식암광석실묘, 횡구식암광석실묘, 암광묘로 나뉘는데, 이 묘제들은 위계 차이와함께 묘역에 따른 차별적 분포가 확인되어 피장자 개인은 물론 집단 간에도 위계가 존재했던 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 현상은 문화교류를 통해 접촉될 수 있는 무덤 요소들의 범위가 조묘자의 사회적 지위에 따라 달리형성되었고, 암광 묘제는 그러한 배경에서 이루어진 조묘자의 차별적 문화선택을 통해 서로 다른 요소들이복합됨에 따라 상이한 구조를 보이는 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

This paper reviews the period during which rock pit tombs came to be constructed around Okseong-ri, and the structure and distributional patterns of this tomb type. In addition, this subject is approached from the perspective that material culture is generated through the active strategies and actions of individuals in various contexts. Using this approach, the background of the construction of rock pit tombs and differences in tomb structure are examined, and inferences are made regarding the internal structure and trends of the groups that built such tombs.
The results of the analysis show that the rock pit tomb flourished from the fourth quarter of the 5th century to the second quarter of the 6th century. In addition, the rock pit tomb was identified to be a combination of the stone chamber tomb with corridor or stone chamber tomb with horizontal entrance and the rock pit element. The background for this change was found in the situation of the Heunghae area at the time, the unstable social environment it triggered, as well as the geological environment in the area that was recognized and experienced. It is postulated that the tomb builders around Okseong-ri established the tradition of rock pit tombs with the intention of reinforcing group unity and cohesion against such a backdrop.
Furthermore, rock pit tombs were classified into three categories: rock pit burial tombs, rock pit chamber tombs withhorizontal entrances, and rock pit chamber tombs with corridors.
It was recognized that a certain degree of hierarchical differentiation existed between the tomb types, and that such differentiation existed not only between individuals but also between groups, with differential distribution patterns observed according to the burial ground. It is thought that this phenomenon resulted from the fact that the range of tomb elements made available through cultural exchange was determined by the social status of the tomb builders, and by the differential cultural choices made by the tomb builders in this context.
