초록

적석목곽묘의 관한 연구는 ‘기원과 계통’, ‘개념과 범주’, ‘발생과 전개과정’, ‘구조와 축조공정’, ‘출토유물’, ‘제사와 위계’, ‘분형’ 등 다양하며, 계속되는 발굴조사로 연구 주제는 조금씩 그 흐름을 바뀌어 왔다. 최근에는 대형 고총·고분군이 밀집되어있는 경주 중심지 고분군(대릉원 일대) 뿐만 아니라 황성동 고분군, 오릉, 탑동 고분군, 보문동 고분군, 금척리 고분군, 방내리 고분군, 사라리 고분군, 덕천리 고분군, 구어리 고분군, 사방리 고분군, 안계리 고분군 등에서도 다양한 적석목곽묘가 확인되고 있다. 그러나 중심지 고분군의 규모, 형태, 구조, 의미, 유물 수량, 위계 등이 주변 고분군보다 압도적이며, 신라의 성장 과정의 중심에서 빼놓을 수 없는 부분이기에 적석목곽묘의 연구에 있어 집중되는 경향을 볼 수 있다. 하지만 신라사회의 전반적인 이해를 위해서는 중심고분군과 시대적 맥을 같이하는 주변지역 연구 또한 필수적인 요소라고 생각된다. 따라서 본고에서는 중심고분군의 남쪽에 인접하여 위치한 탑동고분군의 적석목곽묘의 구조적인 요소들을 파악하고 특징들을 파악하고자 한다. 탑동지역의 적석목곽묘는 5세기 중·후반 이후부터 본격적으로 축조되고, 6세기 전반까지 축조되며 늦게는 중반까지 축조되는 양상이다. 이는 황남대총과 같은 최상위 계층에서 적석목곽묘가 채택된 이후 탑동지역에 축조되기 시작한 것으로 비록 경주 중심 고분군에서 조사된 고분과 비교하면 규모나 출토유물의 위계는 상당히 떨어지는 편이나, 축조방식과 구조적인 요소들은 잘 반영되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 하지만 기본적인 축조방법과 구성요소들은 동일한 양상을 보이는 반면 세부적인 축조방법 상의 다양성과 변형된 형태의 묘형이 확인된다. 이는 묘제 채택 이후 선택에 있어 강제성이 동원되었다기보다는 자발적으로 선택하였을 가능성이 높으며, 선택 후 제작과정에서 전통적인 축조방식은 따르되 무덤제작자의 의견 및 선택적인 부분과 축조당시의 재료 수급 상황들에 따라 다양한 형태로 적석목곽묘가 확인되는 것을 볼 수 있으며, 동시기의 목곽묘 및 석곽묘가 확인되는 것은 사회적으로 묘제 선택 및 축조에 있어 자율성이 부여된 것으로 판단된다. 이는 보수적이라고 할 수 있는 무덤 조성에 있어 어느 정도 다양성이 인정되는 사회적 합의가 이루어졌을 것으로 보여진다.

Academic investigations into the stone wooden chamber tombs encompass a spectrum of dimensions, including 'origin and ancestry,' 'concept and category,' 'occurrence and development process,' and 'structure and construction process. 'Diverse research topics within this domain encompass 'excavated artifacts,' 'ancestral rites and hierarchy,' and 'mounds.' The trajectory of research in this field has evolved in response to ongoing excavations, marking a discernible shift in scholarly focus. In recent times, a myriad of stone wooden chamber tombs have been unearthed, not only within the Hwangseong-dong tomb group, Oreung, Tapdong tomb group, Bomun-dong tomb group, Geumcheok-ri tomb group, Bangnae tomb group, Sarari tomb group, Deokcheon-ri tomb group, Gueo-ri tomb group, Sabang-ri tomb group, and Angye-ri tomb group but also within the Gyeongju central tomb group (specifically the Daereungwon area), characterized by the concentration of substantial ancient tombs. The Gyeongju central tomb exhibits an overwhelming scale, shape, structure, meaning, quantity of relics, and hierarchy in comparison to neighboring tomb groups. Consequently, a predominant focus in research on stone wooden chamber tombs has been directed toward the Gyeongju central tomb group. However, recognizing the importance of encompassing both the Gyeongju central tomb group and its surrounding areas, which share the same historical context, becomes imperative for a comprehensive understanding of Silla society. Consequently, this study seeks to elucidate the structural elements and distinctive characteristics of stone wooden chamber tombs within the Top-dong Ancient Tombs, situated to the south of the Gyeongju central tomb group. The stone wooden chamber tombs within the Top-dong region underwent significant construction activity primarily during the mid to late 5th century, persisting untilthe initial half of the 6th century, and extending into the middle of that century. The adoption of stone wooden chamber tombs by the uppermost social stratum, exemplified by the Hwangnamdae Tomb, marked the initiation of their construction within the Top-dong area. Despite the discernible disparity in scale and hierarchical importance of recovered artifacts between Top-dong Ancient Tombs and the Gyeongju central tomb group, the construction methodology and structural elements evident in Top-dong Ancient Tombs exhibit a noteworthy resemblance to those observed in the Gyeongju central tomb group. Nevertheless, within the Top-dong tomb group, a confirmed diversity in intricate construction methods and a distinctive modification in tomb shape are identified, distinguishing it from the Gyeongju central tomb group. This inference suggests that the adoption of the tomb type was likely a result of autonomous decision-making rather than being compelled during the selection of the subsequent construction method. Following the tomb type selection, the traditional construction method is adhered to throughout the construction process. However, it is evident that stone wooden chamber tombs manifest in diverse forms based on the preferences and decisions of tomb builders, as well as the prevailing material supply and demand conditions during the construction period. The fact that wooden tombs and stone tombs were discovered even during the same period is believed to indicate that social autonomy was granted in the selection and construction of tombs. This appears to have resulted in a social consensus that allows for some degree of diversity in the construction of tombs, which can be considered conservative.
