강화도 지석묘 축조의 사회경제적 배경 검토 (A Study on the Socio-Economic Background of the Construction of Dolmens in Ganghwa)

초록

강화도는 그동안 대형 탁자식지석묘의 존재와 대규모 지석묘군의 분포로 주목받아 왔으며, 국내 초기복합사회 형성론의 중심에 있었다. 하지만, 강화도 지석묘 연구는 지석묘 자체의 규모와 형식, 분포에 주목하여 전개되었을 뿐, 지석묘 축조 배경에 대한 검토는 본격적으로 이루어지지 않았다.
본고에서는 강화도 지석묘의 차별적인 분포패턴은 단위공동체 간의 사회경제적 기반의 차이에서 비롯된것이며, 이는 공동체의 취락 규모와 관계가 있다고 보았다. 이것은 강화도 내에서 취락 입지로 적합한 지역은대규모 취락이 발달할 가능성이 높고, 취락 내의 대규모 노동력과 이를 기반으로 축적된 경제력은 지석묘의축조 배경으로 작용하였다는 것을 전제로 한다. 이를 입증하기 위해 지석묘 분포와 GIS의 Fuzzy Overlay를이용하여 추정한 취락 적지와의 관계성을 검토하였다.
검토 결과, 지석묘 I·II·III유형이 모두 분포하고, 단위유역 중 가장 많은 지석묘가 분포하는 삼거유역에서상대적으로 넓은 취락 적지가 확인되었다. 뿐만 아니라, 삼거유역은 전작을 통해 생업경제자원 확보가 가능한 조건을 갖추고 있었으며, 무엇보다도 도서지역에서 가장 중요한 용수를 안정적으로 확보할 수 있는 입지환경을 지니고 있었다. 이것은 삼거유역으로 대표되는 국지적 단위가 강화도 내에서 경제적으로 우위를 점하고 있었다는 것을 시사한다. 이러한 사회경제적 기반을 배경으로 성장한 삼거유역의 수장층은 정치권력을 보다 확대하고, 공동체를 유지하기 위한 전략으로 유역의 경계지점인 산능선과 교통로를 따라 탁자식지석묘를축조하였다고 본다. 그리고 이러한 국지적 단위공동체의 정치경제적 성장은 지역적 차원에서 대규모 노동력을 통제할 수 있는 기제로 작용하여, 결과적으로 사적 제137호 부근리지석묘와 같은 대형 지석묘를 축조하는배경이 되었다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The dolmens of Ganghwa Island, notable for the existence of large table-type dolmens and the distribution of large-scale dolmen groups, have been a major target of early-stage complex social theory in Korea. However, full-fledged discussions on the socio- economic background of dolmen construction have yet to take place. In this paper, the construction of dolmens was regarded as a result of the economic power of the chief or community that was involved in the process of social integration, and this economic power was examined through the estimation of settlement location.
It is presumed that large-scale settlements are likely to develop in areas suitable for settlement, and that the economic power accumulated through the securing of a large-scale labor force became the socio-economic background for the construction of dolmens. In other words, the assumption is that local units demonstrating a high concentration of dolmens, which indicates a degree of increased social complexity, would also have a high ratio of settlement areas. To prove this, the distribution patterns of Type I, II, and III dolmens were established, and the relationship between the distribution patterns of the dolmens was analyzed using Fuzzy Overlay, one of the most representative archaeological predictive models.
According to the analysis, Types I, II, and III dolmens were observed in the research area and the Samgeo basin, where the largest number of dolmens were distributed, was found to have a relatively wide range of suitable sites for settlement. In addition, the Samgeo Basin was characterized by favorable conditions for securing subsistence and economic resources based on farming; above all, the location featured a stable environment for securing water, the most important resource on islands. This shows that the local unit represented by the Samgeo basin had an economic advantage within Ganghwa Island. The chiefs, who emerged against the backdrop of such socio-economic foundations, are believed to have built table-type dolmens along the mountain ridge and transportation routes, which act as the boundary points of the basin, as part of a strategy to expand political power and maintain the community. This political and economic system served as a mechanism for the control of large-scale labor forces at a regional level, thus providing the background for the construction of large-scale dolmens such as the Bugun-ri dolmen (Historic Site No. 137).
