조선시대 회격묘 출토 유물의 수습과 보존 (The Lifting and Conservation of Artifacts from the Lime and Soil Mixture Burials of the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

회격묘는 조선시대 대표적인 묘제로, 광중 안에 회격을 조성하고 그 안에 목곽과 목관을 배치하는 형식이다. 외부환경과 완벽히 차단되기 때문에 상태가 비교적 양호한 목관 및 복식, 미라 등 많은 유물이 출토되고 있다. 최근 조선시대 분묘에 대한 발굴조사 증가와 함께 다양한 인접학문의 협조가 가능해져 회격묘 출토유물에 대한 많은 연구성과가 도출되고 있다. 그러나 발굴조사에서 적절한 수습방법과 보존 그리고 유기적인 학제 간 연구는 아직 미흡한 형편이다. 본 논문은 회격묘에 대한 문헌고찰이나 형식 분류보다는 회격묘 출토유물에 대한 수습과 보존처리, 과학 분석의 기존 연구 성과를 살펴보고, 발굴조사 시 고려해야 할 회격묘 출토유물에 대한 고고학과 인접학문과의 유기적인 협동연구의 기초 자료를 마련하고자 하였다. 한백문화재연구원에서는 각 분야의 전문가들과 함께 경기도 남양주 별내택지개발 사업지구 회격묘 출토유물에 대한 수습, 보존처리, 과학분석을 실시하였다. 그 과정에서 발굴조사 시 다양한 유물에 대한 전문적인 식견과 수습 방법, 보존에 대한 중요성이 대두되었다. 출토된 유물은 현재 전문적인 보존처리와 과학분석이 진행 중이며, 지속적인 교류를 통하여 회격묘에 대한 종합적인 연구성과가 기대된다. 회격묘는 다양한 재질의 유물이 외부와 차단된 복합적이고 유기적인 환경에서 오랜 시간동안 매장되어 있다. 따라서 이를 연구하기 위해서는 고고학을 비롯한 보존과학 및 의학, 인류학, 전통복식학, 자연과학, 지질학, 인문학 등 다양하고 전문적인 분야의 학제 간 연구가 상호협력적인 관계에서 이루어져야 한다. 이는 회격묘 조사 초기단계 부터 시작되어야 하며 조사완료 후에도 유기적인 연구체제로 이어지도록 해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The lime and soil mixture burial, which is one of the main burial types used in the Joseon Dynasty, consists of a wooden outer coffin and wooden coffin surrounded by a lime mixture. Due to the lime and soil mixture, which completely seals off the outer environment, large amounts of artifacts can be retrieved from the burials, including the coffin, the mummified deceased, and his or her dress. Recently, the increased number of lime and soil mixture burials excavated, as well as various possibilities for interdisciplinary research, has led to many developments in the study of artifacts from these burials. However, methods of artifact lifting and conservation require further consideration, as does the issue of establishing a more integrated system of study between researchers from different disciplines. The present paper therefore considers existing research on the lifting, conservation, and scientific analysis of artifacts from lime and soil mixture burials, rather than focusing on typological classification or examining literary records. In doing so, it aims to present the foundations for integrated and complimentary research between archaeology and other associated disciplines when dealing with the excavation of artifacts from lime and soil mixture burials. Hanbaek Research Institute for Cultural Heritage, with specialists from various fields, carried out the lifting, conservation and scientific analysis of artifacts from lime and soil mixture burials from the Byeollae housing development site. During this process of excavation, the importance of professional insight into, and lifting and conservation of, the various artifacts came to be acknowledged. The excavated artifacts are currently in the process of conservation or scientific analysis, and it is hoped that continued interdisciplinary research will lead to a more synthetic understanding of lime and soil mixture burials. The lime and soil mixture burials of the Joseon Dynasty yield artifacts made of diverse materials which were contained in a complex and organic environment, isolated from the outside, for a significant amount of time. The study of these artifacts, therefore, must take place through the co-operation and inter-disciplinary research of various fields, such as archeology, conservation science, medical science, anthropology, traditional dress studies, natural science, geology, and the humanities. This must take place from the initial stage of investigation and continue on after excavation, establishing an integrated research system.
