지상식 적석목곽묘의 구조 재검토 (Reconsideration of the structure of above-ground stone-mounded wooden chamber tombs)

초록

이 글에서는 지상식 적석목곽묘의 구조를 살피고 그 축조공정을 복원하였다. 이를 위해 기존 보고된 내용을 면밀하게 검토하고 오류로 판단되는 부분을 중심으로 수정안을 제시하였다.
발굴보고서에서는 천마총을 1곽 1관, 황남대총 북분을 2곽 1관의 구조로 보고하여, 황남대총 남분의 3곽 1관 구조가 황남대총 북분에서 중곽이 생략되고, 천마총에서 목곽의 높이가 낮아지는 것으로 보는 연구가 있었다. 한편, 그 후의 연구에서는 황남대총 북분과 천마총에서 중곽이 있었을 것으로 보는 연구가 나오기 시작하였다. 필자도 그 큰 틀에서는 공감하지만, 구체적인 구조의 이해와 그 근거의 미약함을 지적하고 천마총 주칠 냇돌의 출토범위와 함몰 정황 등을 검토하여 이를 보완하였다.
정리하자면 첫째, 황남대총 북분과 천마총은 중곽이 있는 3곽 1관의 구조이고 둘째, 천마총의 목곽 높이는 단칠 냇돌의 출토 정황을 볼 때 2.1m에서 3.4m로 수정할 수 있었다. 셋째, 이를 바탕으로 복원한 축조공정에서는 중곽이 외곽보다 먼저 만들어지고 외곽은 적석목곽묘의 지상화에 따른 적석부의 축조와 깊은 관련이 있음을 알 수 있으며 넷째, 이들의 비교를 통해 지상식 적석목곽묘의 정형성을 고찰하였는데 특히 중곽의 평면 크기가 높은 유사성을 보임을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 다섯째, 이러한 지상식 적석목곽묘의 평면구조가 신라 전기 이른 시기의 대형 지하식 적석목곽묘인 쪽샘 L17호와의 유사함을 확인하여 그 기원에 관한 단서를 엿볼 수 있었다.

영어초록

In this article we examine the construction of above-ground stone-mounded wooden chamber tombs and reconstruct their construction process. To do this, we have examined the existing reports and proposed revisions based on what we believe to be errors.
In the excavation report, the Cheonmachong tomb was described as a 1-chamber 1-coffin structure and the north mound of Hwangnam-daechong tomb as a 2-chamber 1-coffin structure, which led some researchers to believe that the 3-chamber 1-coffin structure of the south mound of Hwangnam-daechong tomb was changed by the omission of the central chamber in the northern part of the Hwangnam-daechong tomb and the lowering of the chamber in the Cheonmachong tomb. On the other hand, later studies have begun to suggest that there may have been a central chamber in the north mound of Hwangnam-daechong and Cheonmachong. While I agree with the general framework, I have pointed out the weakness of the evidence and understanding of the specific structure, and supplemented it by examining the excavation area and the depression of the Cheonmachong red lacquer stone.
In summary, I have shown that, first, the north mound of Hwangnam Daechong tombs and the Cheonmachong are a three-chamber, one-coffin structure with a central chamber; second, the height of the Cheonmachong's neckline can be revised from 2.1 metres to 3.4 metres based on the excavation of the red lacquer stone. Third, the reconstructed construction process shows that the central chamber was built before the outer chamber, and the outer chamber is closely related to the construction of the red stone part due to the grounding of the stone-mounded wooden chamber tombs; fourth, through the comparison, the formality of the grounded red stone mausoleum was examined, and it was found that the plane size of the central chamber was very similar. Finally, fifthly, we confirmed the similarity of the floor plan of the above-ground stone-mounded wooden chamber tombs with that of the large underground stone-mounded wooden chamber tombs of the early Silla period, Jjoksam L17, and provided clues to it.
