신라 옹관묘의 축조와 의례적 성격 (The Construction and the funeral rites for a Jar Coffin Tombs in Silla Area)

초록

이 글은 어린아이의 전용 무덤이라고 인식되던 옹관묘 중 특징적인 양상을 보이는 석곽 옹관묘를 대상으로 배치양상, 유물부장양상 등을 검토하여 유형별 옹관묘의 성격을 검토한 것이다.
신라권역에는 토광 옹관묘와 함께 석곽 옹관묘가 확인되고, 다양한 유물이 부장되었다. 유물은 크게 부장품과 봉헌유물로 구분되지만 일정한 부장패턴은 확인되지 않았다. 옹관 내부에는 주로 도자, 경식과 같은 착장형 유물과 소형 토기류가 부장되고, 옹관 외부의 일정한 공간에서 확인되는 봉헌유물은 각종 토기류와 무기류가 부장된다는 특징이 있다. 특히 토기는 대부장경호, 단경호, 고배 등이 부장되지만 그중에서도 파배의 부장비율이 높아 주목된다. 단언하기 어렵지만 파배는 옹관묘에 부장되는 선호기종으로 파악된다. 또한 옹관묘에 부장된 토기들은 동시기 고분의 부장품과 비교해봤을 때 비교적 소형으로 제작·부장되었다는 특징이 있고, 이외에도 어린아이의 장난감으로 추정되는 차형토기, 토구, 방울 등도 부장예도 확인되어 주목된다.
한편, 신라의 옹관묘는 4~5세기 이후부터 신라권역을 중심으로 옹관 주변에 돌을 채워 넣은 (위석형)석곽 옹관묘가 유행하게 되었는데, 적석목곽묘의 발전과정과 비슷한 변화상을 거치는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 석곽 옹관묘는 주 고분과의 배치 형태에 따라 독립식, 부곽식, 배묘식으로 구분된다. 각 유형별 옹관묘에 대한 성격은 독립식은 독립장, 부곽식은 순장곽 혹은 허장, 배묘식은 배장으로 이해되지만, 부장유물과 배치형태를 통해 다양한 성격을 추정해 볼 수 있었다.
우선 독립묘식 옹관묘는 조성 위치, 시상을 비롯한 각종 시설, 유물의 부장양상을 검토하여 위계가 인정되는 유아의 전용묘제로 추정해 보는 것이 합리적이라 보았다. 옹관묘의 피장자는 부모의 지위와 경제적 부의 영향을 받은 특정지위(귀속지위)를 가진 어린아이의 독립묘인 것이다.
부곽식과 배묘식 옹관묘는 순장곽 혹은 배장묘라는 의견에 동의하면서 추가적인 검토를 진행하였다. 즉 부곽식, 배묘식 옹관묘를 유아묘라는 입장에서 유아를 순장한 배경에 대해검토해 보았다. 고대 한국 및 중국의 자료를 살펴보면 고대사회에서는 유아를 희생한 인제(人祭)사례가 다수 확인되고, 실제 중국에서는 질그릇에 어린아이들을 매장한 사례도 확인되고 있어 옹관묘가 유아를 순장했다는 사실을 어느정도 뒷받침 해 준다고 보았다.
한편, 이러한 부곽식·배묘식 옹관묘는 제의유구와의 유사성도 인정된다. 옹관묘라 하더라도 내부에 피장자 안치공간이 마련되지 않거나, 옹관이 부장품과 동일한 개념으로 부장된 경우, 호석과 인접하여 기타 제의유구와 유사성이 인정되는 경우는 옹관묘가 고분이 축조되는 과정에서 이루어진 의례유구일 가능성도 있다고 보았다.
마지막으로 특정 옹관묘를 대상으로 하여 축조과정을 복원하였는데, 무덤이 만들어지는 단계마다 확인되는 유물의 출토위치와 공반관계를 파악하고 일부지만 의례양상도 파악해 보고자 하였다.

영어초록

Previous research on the jar coffin tomb was mostly about the child’s social status or personality or the structure and arrangement of the jar coffin tomb but hardly dealt with the burial custom to entomb the body into the earthenware. This study is intended to examine several burial rituals performed in the jar coffin tomb, one of the characteristic burial customs. The elements of burial rituals in the jar coffin tomb can be understood with the direction of the buried person’s head, the kinds and characteristics of grave goods and the position of them, or the arrangement of the jar coffin tomb, and putting them together, this author has studied it multilaterally.
The types of arrangement of the jar coffin tomb can be categorized into 독립묘(獨立 墓, independent jar tomb), 부곽식(副槨式, attached jar tomb), and 배장묘식(陪葬式, subordinate jar tomb), and this researcher has reexamined the types of arrangement and grave goods according to the types.
Up until now, as the jar coffin tomb has the structure affiliated with the main chamber they have regarded that the buried person in the jar coffin tomb should have blood ties with the one buried in the main chamber or be buried by 殉葬(burial of the living with the dead); however, examining the characteristics of the jar coffin tomb by types, this author has estimated various burial features of the jar coffin tomb.
First of all, it is reasonable to presume that the jar coffin tomb of the 獨立墓 type was the myoje for children high in rank; meanwhile, about the jar coffin tomb of the 副槨式 or 陪葬式, we can admit that part of it is similar to the service goods used in the 墓祭(a memorial service held before the grave) carried out after building the ancient tomb completely, and we can also assume that some of them were relics associated with grave construction ritual performed in the process of building the feudal territory.
Moreover, though this does not apply to every case, we can assume that the jar coffin tomb previously referred to as the 副槨式 was built for the a box for burial objects intended to present all sorts of ritual goods used in the process of building the main chamber. The ground of this can be found from the aspects of destruction and types of relics excavated from inside.
Lastly, although restoring the process of building the jar coffin tomb is not the example applying to all kinds of jar coffin tomb, with the structure of the stone outer jar coffin tomb and position of grave goods, we can examine the process of constructing the jar coffin tomb and the aspects of ritual about different parts of it approximately.
