초록

본고는 12세기 高麗 墓誌銘의 글쓰기 수준을 확인함으로써 12세기 한국 산문의 문학사적 단계를 가늠하기 위해 그 篇章法의 程式에 주목했다. 12세기 고려 묘지명은 170편 정도가 남아있으나 본격적인 연구가 거의 진행된 바 없고, 글쓰기의 수준을 알아보는 데는 그 구성과 문법 및 文體(style)에 주목하는 것이 효과적이라는 판단 때문이다.
그 결과 첫째, 12세기 고려 묘지명에서 屬辭比事의 篇法을 효과적으로 사용했음을 확인했다. 이 시기 묘지명의 撰者들은 특정 사건이나 사안을 구심점으로 삼아 墓主의 행적이 시기별로 고립·분산되는 문제를 해결하고 그 전모를 분명하게 제시하기 위해 이 정식을 사용했다. 宰樞, 左·右正言, 知制誥, 武將 등을 포함한 다양한 관료들의 묘지명에 ‘속사비사’의 구성 문법이 활용되었으며, 여기에 『春秋左氏傳』과 歐陽脩가 쓴 碑誌文의 구성이 참조되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
둘째, 12세기 고려 묘지명에서는 ‘속사비사’의 미비점을 보완하기 위해 마스터플롯(master plot)을 활용한 경우도 살펴볼 수 있었다. ‘僧傳 마스터플롯’으로 구성한 승려의 묘지명이 대표적인 사례이다. 이러한 ‘승전 마스터플롯’은 道宣의 『續高僧傳』에서 시작해 『文苑英華』와 崔致遠이 쓴 승려의 碑誌로 이어진 뒤, 12세기 고려 묘지명에 영향을 끼친 것으로 보인다. 아울러 아직 마스터플롯이라 부르기는 힘들지만, 改名의 계기와 柳下惠 모티프(motif)로 서사의 빈틈을 메운 작품 역시 주목된다.
셋째, 묘지명 撰述의 계기를 담은 서술의 제 양상, 추모와 애도의 표현 방식, 일화적(소설적) 구성 등, 章法 차원의 서술 문법에 관한 탐구를 통해서도 12세기 묘지명 글쓰기의 수준을 가늠할 수 있었다. 특히 唐代 묘지명에서도 보이는바 ‘찬술 계기를 서술한 단락’을 통해 묘지명의 사실성과 공정성을 강조하고, 祭文·哀辭·誄의 장르 문법을 차용해 망자에 대한 추모와 애도를 전하며, 소설적 구성으로써 상황을 핍진하게 재현하고 묘주의 개성을 입체적으로 제시한 데서 그 원숙함을 짐작할 수 있었다.
이로써 볼 때, 12세기 백 년 동안 찬술된 고려 묘지명은, 이전 시대 한국과 중국 묘지명의 장점을 흡수해 자기화한 산물이며, 그 구성과 글쓰기의 수준은 이미 원숙한 단계로 진입했다고 평가할 만하다. 아울러 위 결과와 선행 연구에 기대어 보면, 13세기와는 다른 한국 산문사의 또 다른 斷代로 12세기를 설정하는 일 역시 고려해봄 직하다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the standard grammar for organizing a piece of writing and grammar for organizing paragraphs of the epitaph in the Koryŏ dynasty, 12th century, in order to confirm and estimate the writing level and literary historical stage. Although close to 170 epitaphs from the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century), little full-scale research has been conducted, and it is believed that it is effective to pay attention to the composition, grammar, and style of writing in order to determine the level of writing.
The results are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the epitaph of the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century) effectively used the writing method that links words together and arranges similar events(屬辭比事). The epitaph narrators of this period used this formula to clearly present the entire story and eliminate the problem of the deceased’s actions being isolated and dispersed by period by using a specific event or issue as the central point. The writing method that links words together and arranges similar events was used in the epitaphs of various officials, including the bureaucrats who remonstrate(左·右正言), bureaucrats who write official documents(知制誥), military officers(武將), and ministers(宰樞), and Chunqiu(Spring and Autumn Annals) Zuo Zhuan(春秋左氏傳) and It was confirmed that the composition of the memorial text(碑誌文) written by Ouyang, xiu(歐陽脩) was referenced.
Second, epitaphs of the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century), we were able to look at examples of the use of a master plot to make up for the shortcomings of the writing method that links words together and arranges similar events. For example, a representative example is the epitaph of a monk composed of the monk’s biography master plot, which is the framework of a narrative that appears repeatedly. This master plot of monk’s biography master plot begins with Daoxuan’s Xu gaoseng zhuan(續高僧傳) and continues with Wenyuan yinghua(文苑英華) and the monk’s memorial text written by Choe Chi-won. It appears to have influenced epitaphs of the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century). In addition, although it is still difficult to call it a master plot, the work that fills in the gaps in the narrative with the opportunity to change the name and the motif of Ryu, Ha-hye(柳下惠) is also attracting attention.
Third, in terms of grammar for organizing paragraphs, that highlights the demeanor and administrative record of the tomb owner’s life, the opportunity for the epitaph description, memorial and mourning, and anecdotal(novel) descriptive grammar, including composition, was sufficient to estimate the level of epitaph writing in the 12th century. As seen in the Tang Dynasty epitaph, the factuality and fairness of the epitaph are emphasized through the ‘paragraph describing the occasion of the funeral’ in the epitaphs of the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century). And the epitaphs of the Koryŏ dynasty(12th century) conveyed remembrance and condolences to the deceased by borrowing the genre grammar of a funeral oration(祭文), a message of condolence(哀辭), and a letter of condolence(誄), and conveyed the situation in a novel way. We can guess its maturity by reproducing it and presenting the individuality of the tomb owner in a three-dimensional way.
From this point of view, the epitaphs written over a hundred years in the Koryŏ dynasty, the 12th century are a product of absorbing and internalizing the influence of Korean and Chinese epitaphs from previous eras, and their composition and level of writing can be evaluated as complete. In addition, based on the results discussed so far and previous research, it is also worth considering setting the 12th century as another period of Korean prose history, different from the 13th century.
