백제 전실묘의 구조와 축조 배경 재검토 (Re-examination of Structure and Construction Background of Baekje Brick-Chamber Tombs)

초록

본고는 백제 전실묘인 무령왕릉과 공주 송산리 6호분, 교촌리 3호분을 중심으로 전실묘의 구조와 밀접한 관련이 있는 전실묘 축조용 전에 대해 살펴보았다. 다음으로 전실묘의 각 세부 구조에서 보이는 전 체축(砌築)양상을 확인하여 무령왕릉과 송산리 6호분의 구조적 차이를 새롭게 검토하였다. 이러한 작업 이후, 필자는 백제 전실묘의 축조 선후관계와 백제 웅진기에 외래 묘제인 전실묘가 축조된 배경에 대한 견해를 제시하였다.
먼저 백제에서 처음 축조된 전실묘는 교촌리 3호분으로 추정되는데, 이는 그 구조와 축조용 전으로 보아 중국 남조 전실묘 축조 기술의 직접적인 영향이 간취되지 않는다. 따라서 필자는 교촌리 3호분을 백제의 전실묘 축조 기술의 미숙에서 비롯된 미완성 전실묘로 판단하였다. 이후 중국 남조의 전실묘 축조 기술(造墓技術)보다는 남조 梁의 전 제작 기술(造塼技術)의 직접적인 도입에 의하여 壬辰年(512)을 전후한 시점에 무령왕릉과 교촌리 2호분이 축조된 것으로 보았다. 한편 송산리 6호분은 무령왕릉 축조 이후, 전실묘의 벽체 두께와 벽화 배치 등을 고려하여 일부 백제적 變容이 이루어졌을 가능성이 있다고 판단하였다. 이를 통해‘교촌리 3호분 → 교촌리 2호분․무령왕릉 → 송산리 6호분’의 축조 선후관계를 제시하였다.
교촌리 3호분의 축조 상황과 더불어, 백제 한성기부터 지속된 중국 남조 제정권과의 교류 관계를 고려한다면 백제인들은 이미 중국의 묘제인 전실묘를 인지하고 있었으며, 백제 웅진기에 중국 남조와 같은 전실묘를 축조해야만 하는 어떠한 당위성에 의해 재지 기술로써 교촌리 3호분과 같은 전실묘를 축조한 것으로 추정된다. 그러나 전실묘 축조 기술의 미숙으로 교촌리 3호분의 축조가 실패함에 따라 백제는 壬辰年을 전후한 시점에 梁의 造塼 기술을 도입하여 무령왕릉과 송산리 6호분을 축조한 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This study looked into Baekje brick-chamber tombs, such as Royal Tomb of King Muryeong, Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri, Gongju and Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri, and bricks for the construction of each brick-chamber tomb in close relation with the structure of the brick-chamber tomb. Next, it looked into each of the detailed structure of the brick-chamber tombs and the aspect of the masonry of bricks and re-examined the structural differences between the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong and Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri. After this work, the author presented opinions about the order of Baekje’s construction of brick-chamber tombs and the background of the construction of brick-chamber tombs, a foreign tomb burial system during the Baekje Ungjin Period.
First, it was assumed that Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri might be the first brick-chamber tomb built for the first time in the Baekje region, and judging from its structure and the bricks for construction, there is no sign of a direct impact of the brick-chamber tomb construction technology of Southern Dynasties, so accordingly, Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri was judged to be an unfinished brick-chamber tomb originating from Baekje’s unskillfulness of the brick-chamber tomb construction technology. It was deemed that the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong and Tomb No. 2 in Gyochon-ri were built later with the direct introduction of the brick making technology of the Liang Dynasty, at the point of time around the year of Imjin (512) rather than Southern Dynasties brick-chamber tomb construction technology. In the meantime, it was judged that Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri was later transformed partially into Baekje style considering the thickness of the walls of the brick-chamber tomb and the placement of murals, later than the construction of the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong. Through this, the order of construction was presented as follows: ‘Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri → Tomb No. 2 in Gyochon-ri and Royal Tomb of King Muryeong → Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri.’Along with the situation of the construction of Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri, if the exchange relationship with all regimes of Southern Dynasties continued since the Baekje Hanseong Period is considered, Baekje people already recognized the brick-chamber tomb, a tomb burial system of China, and it was assumed that the construction of brick-chamber tombs like Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri were attempted by the local technology with a justification that necessitated the construction of brick-chamber tombs like those in Southern Dynasties during the Baekje Ungjin Period. However, as the construction of Tomb No. 3 in Gyochon-ri failed due to unskillfulness of the technology, it seems that at the point of time around 512, Baekje introduced the brick making technology of the Liang Dynasty and built the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong and Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri.
