<조신몽>에 나타난 시공간의 변주와 서사적 의미 (A study on the meaning of narrative and change of time-space in Choshinmong)

초록

이 글은 시공간의 변주를 중심으로 <조신몽>의 불교 전기적 특성과 문학사적 의의를 살핀 것이다. 먼저 <조신몽>의 제작의도와 작품의 구도를 불교 전기를 전제하여 살피고, 시공간의 변주가 서사적인 확장과 어떻게 관계되는지 검토하였다. 이를 바탕으로 시공간의 변주에 따른 서사적인 성격이나 문학사적인 의의를 조망하였다.
먼저 제작 의도와 작품의 구도이다. 이 작품은 지식층을 전제하여 제작한 것으로 보인다. 그것도 문식력(文飾力)이 뛰어난 서승(書僧)이 제작했을 것으로 본다. 식자층의 불교 전기라는 점에서 그것은 당연하다 하겠다. 유교계 전기가 가상공간에서나마 모든 것을 행복으로 그린 반면에, <조신몽>은 현실에서의 삶을 고통의 연속으로 담아냈다. 불교에 귀의할 것을 권유하기 위해 그러한 구도를 동원한 것이라 하겠다.
다음으로 변주된 시공간의 활용과 서사적 변이이다. 전기는 현실의 문제를 직설적으로 말하기 곤란할 때 가공의 세계를 창안하고, 그곳에서 현실의 문제를 강력하게 부각한다. 그러는 중에 문학적인 윤색이 가해져서 이야기문학의 발전에도 일조한다. <조신몽>은 꿈을 가상의 시공간으로 내세워 현실의 질곡을 증폭해서 보인 후 불교에 귀의하기를 역설하고 있다. 그러는 중에 서사적인 변이가 촉발되었다. 이른바 서사적인 확장·부연과 수사적인 문체의 발달은 물론 작가의식을 구현할 수 있었다. 가상의 공간이라는 점에서 허구적인 연설이 가능했던 것이다. 대중적인 구비담론을 귀족적인 기록담론으로 변화시켜 전기소설로 발전하는 토대를 마련한 것이다.
마지막으로 시공간의 변주에 따른 서사문학적인 성격과 의의이다. 먼저 서사문학적인 성격으로 불교서사, 불교전기적인 특성을 분명히 했다는 점이다. 꿈을 통해 현실을 부정적으로 다룬 것은 불교적인 이념을 강조한 것으로 불교전기적인 특성을 분명히 한 것이다. 다음으로 불교서사문학사에서 위상을 확보하고 있다는 점이다. 내부액자인 꿈을 비극적으로 그린 작화는 후대 불교서사에서 중시되는 요소이다. 후대에 나온 다수의 불교서사 가 <조신몽>처럼 삼단구조를 구비하되 도입 및 종결액자를 긍정적으로 그리고 내부액자를 비극으로 그렸기 때문이다. <조신몽>이 비극적인 현실을 다루는 불교서사의 초기 모습을 보인다는 점에서 주목할 만하다.

영어초록

This article examines the Buddhist grotesque biographical characteristics and literary historical significance of Chosinmong, focusing on the changes in space and time. Based on this, characteristics of the narrative literature or the significance of the narrative literature history is overlooked according to the variation in space and time.
First of all, it is the intention of production and the composition of the work. This work appears to have been produced on the premise of the intellectual class. Buddhist monk who has excellent literacy skills is also believed to have produced it. That is natural in that it is the biographical literature of the literacy class. Confucian grotesque biographies express happiness in everything, even in virtual space, and are intended to be vicarious satisfaction. But Chosinmong express a life in reality as a series of suffering. To induce devotion for Buddhism is the reasons such structure was mobilized.
Next is the inflection of variated space-time and narrative variation. Grotesque Biography creates a fictional world when it is difficult to directly address the problems of reality, and strongly highlights the problems of reality there. Meanwhile, literary embellishments are applied to the development of story literature. Chosinmong uses dreams as a virtual space-time to amplify the curvature of reality and emphasize the need to converse to Buddhism. By doing so, strong writer consciousness was embodied, as well as epic expansion and addition and development of rhetorical style. It has transformed popular gossip into a aristocratic documentary, laying the groundwork for its development into an grotesque biographical novel.
Lastly, it is an epic literature character and significance according to the variation of space-time. First of all, the Buddhist narrative and the Buddhist grotesque biographical characteristics was made clear with narrative literacy character. The negative handling of reality through dreams is an emphasis on Buddhist ideology, which has made clear its Buddhist biographical characteristics. Next, the tragic treatment of dreams, which is the internal frame, is an important element in later Buddhist history. Many Buddhist narrations from later generations also painted the introduction and closing figures in a positive way and the internal frame as a tragedy in a three-tier structure. Therefore, it should be noted in terms of epic literature history in that Chosinmong is an early work of a Buddhist epic dealing with the early time.
