『영난몽뉴록』 연구 (A Study of Youngnanmongnyurok)

초록

이 글은 20세기 초에 창작된 것으로 추정되는 「영난몽뉴록」을 대상으로 하여, 작품의 의미와 의의를 구명하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이에 작품의 구조적 특징을 분석하고 기존 몽자류와의 비교를 통해 의미를 구명하였으며, 강조된 여성 인물의 성격을분석함으로써 작자의식을 추출해냈다.
이 작품은 기존 몽자류의 구조적 전통을 계승하고 있으나 몽자류의 핵심요소인 꿈은 적강과 귀환이라는 요소로 대체되어 있다. 결국 꿈은 흔적만 남아있었던 것이다.
그런데 이러한 변화는 이미 「옥루몽」과 같은 앞선 시대의 작품에서 시작되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 우리가 꿈이 제거되거나 희미하게 남은 작품을 접하면서도 몽자류라는 확신을 할 수 있었던 이유는 몽자류 양식의 변모 속에서도 몽자류의 구조가 화석화되어 전승되었기 때문이다. 이 작품이 ‘몽유록’이라는 제명을 얻은 연원은 소설사의흐름 속에서 구명할 수 있다. 18~19세기에 성행한 몽자류는 20세기에 이르러 쇠퇴하였고, 구조적 전통은 계승되었으나 장르 인식은 희미해졌다. 이 시기에 다시 몽유록이 몽자류의 자리를 대신하였는데, 이러한 영향으로 이 작품은 몽자류임에도 몽유록의 제명을 부여받은 것이다.
「영난몽유록」은 화석화된 몽자류의 구조적 전통을 계승하였으나, 사상과 인물, 내용 면에서 기존 몽자류의 차별성을 보인다. 기존 몽자류가 유·불·도의 혼합사상을 내세우거나, 도교사상을 중심으로 하여 ‘南柯之夢’을 주제의식의 일단으로 삼은 것과는달리 이 작품은 불교적 색채가 짙다. 여성인 주인공이 현세의 고난을 통해 깨달음을 얻는다는 설정 또한 기존 남성 중심의 몽자류가 극도의 부귀영화를 통해 깨달음을 얻는다는 설정과 명확한 대조를 이룬다. 그러나 작자가 내세운 불가로의 귀의는 표면적인대안일 뿐, 실제 의도는 다른 데 있다. 이 작품에서 여성이 겪는 고난은 지조의 문제와깊은 관련이 있는데, 작자는 조선 사회에서 여성에게만 강요되던 지조의 문제를 남성의信義 문제와 결부시켜 남성의 신의 또한 중요하다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 이러한 면에서우리는 기존 몽자류와 대별되는 「영난몽뉴록」의 독특한 면모를 발견할 수 있다.

영어초록

The research purpose of this thesis is to identify the meaning and significance of the work by targeting Youngnanmongnyurok, a classic novel estimated to have been created in the early 20th century. Thus, this study analyzed the structural characteristics of the work and identified the meaning of Youngnanmongnyurok through comparison with existing Mongjaryu and abstracted author awareness by analyzing the personality of highlighted female characters. This work succeeded to the structural tradition of existing Mongjaryu. However, not specifically revealing a dream, a key element of Mongjaryu, it was replaced with the elements, advent and return. Eventually, the element, dream, left only its trace. But, this change does not originate from Youngnanmongnyurok. It could be confirmed that the change has already started in the works of the prior age such as Okrumong. The reason why we could confirm the works whose element of dreams is blurred or removed as Mongjaryu is because the structure of Mongjaryu was fossilized and has been inherited despite the transformation of the Mongjaryu style. Titling this work as ‘Mongyurok’ is closely related to the flow of the novel history. Mongjaryu which was popular in 18~19th century entered the decline phase in the 20th century and the structural tradition was inherited but genre recognition has faded out. At this time, Mongyurok took the place of Mongjaryu again and due to this effect, this work was granted the name of Mongyurok though it is Mongjaryu. Inheriting the structure of fossilized Mongjaryu, Youngnanmongnyurok shows the differentiation from existing Mongjaryu in terms of thought, characters and contents. Unlike that existing Mongjaryu showed mixed thoughts of Confucianism․Buddhism․Taoism or made ‘Namgajimong’ as its subject focusing on Taoism, this work has a strong Buddhist tone. Also, the female main character finds enlightenment through the sufferings of this world and takes refuge in Buddhism. It makes a clear contrast with the fact that people find enlightenment through wealth and honor in Mongjaryu centering on male characters. However, taking refuge in Buddhism is just the surface alternative and the true intention of the author is totally different. Hardships that women suffer in this work are deeply associated with the issue of fidelity and this was the norm forced to only women in the Joseon society. By connecting the issue of fidelity that was forced to only women with that of faith of men, Youngnanmongnyurok emphasizes that faith of men is also as important as fidelity of women. In this respect, we can find the unique aspects of Youngnanmongnyurok which are significantly distinct from existing Mongjaryu works.
