질병서사로서의 시 읽기의 가능성-조용미 질병 시편에 나타난 질병서사와 몸-자아의 양상을 중심으로 (Possibility of Reading Poetry as a Narrative of Illness –Focusing on the Narrative of Illness and the Aspects of the Body-Self in Jo Yong-mi’s Poems on Illness)

초록

질병은 생로병사의 과정에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중대한 경험이자 인간 삶의 취약함에 대한 성찰적 계기를 제공하기 때문에 문학의 주요 주제로 자리 잡아 왔으나 질병에 대한 현대의 문학적 연구는 주로 소설과 산문 분야에 치중되어 왔고 시를 통한 연구는 드문 편이다. 그러나 각종 질병이 증가하는 현대의 상황에서 아픈 사람에게 무엇보다 중요한 것은 질병을 대하는 새로운 시각과 이를 존재의 실천적 기반으로 삼고자 하는 ‘질병의 윤리학’이라고 한다면, 의학 담론에 압도되어 자신의 질병이 지닌 의미와 목소리를 상실한 사람들이 고통과 치유의 의미를 사유할 수 있는 질병서사로서의 현대시를 읽어내는 연구방법도 필요해 보인다. 본 연구에서는 긴 세월 동안 만성통증을 앓는 가운데 경험한 통증과 아픈 몸을 통해 드러나는 몸- 자아의 다기(多岐)한 모습을 보여 주는 조용미의 질병 시편을 중심으로 질병서사와 몸-자아의 양상을 살펴봄으로써 질병서사로서의 시 읽기의 가능성을 탐구해보고자 하였다.
조용미의 질병 시편은 미학적 성과와 윤리적 실천으로서의 질병서사 역할을 동시에 견인해내고 있다는 점에서 우리 현대 시사에서 보기 드문 질병 시의 사례로 꼽힐 수 있을 것이다. 조용미의 질병 시편에 나타난 질병서사와 몸-자아의 양상은 오랜 기간 동안 아픈 몸과의 대면 속에서 몸과 대척 상태에 놓여 있을 때의 무매개적인 혼돈의 서사와 자신의 몸과 결합함으로써 고통을 수용하고 새로운 몸-자아를 생성해나가는 탐구의 서사를 통해 자신의 질병을 증언해온 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이때의 혼돈의 서사와 탐구의 서사는 이분법적으로 분리된 것이 아니라 질병을 살아가는 이야기로 함께 존재해왔다. 조용미의 질병 시편은 고통의 나락 속에서 껍질을 벗어버리고 새롭게 몸-자아를 창조해나가는 언어를 발견함으로써 삶을 지속시켜 온 하나의 시적 실천으로 볼 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Illness has been a major theme in literature because it is an essential experience that cannot be missed in the process of birth, aging, illness, and death, and because it provides an opportunity to reflect on the fragility of human life.그However, modern literary studies on disease have mainly focused on novels and prose, with studies through poetry being rare. In the modern situation where various diseases are increasing, if what is most important to sick people is a new perspective on dealing with diseases and an ‘ethics of diseases’ that seeks to make this a practical basis for existence, then it seems necessary to read modern poetry as a narrative of diseases that allows people who have lost the meaning and voice of their own diseases, overwhelmed by medical discourse, to think about the meaning of pain and healing. In this study, we aimed to explore the possibility of reading poetry as a narrative of illness by examining the aspects of illness narrative and body-self, focusing on the poems of Jo Yong-mi about illness, which show the diverse aspects of the body-self revealed through the pain and the sick body experienced while suffering from chronic pain for a long time.
Jo Yong-mi’s poems on illness can be considered a rare example of poetry on illness in our contemporary poetry, in that they simultaneously pursue the role of illness narrative as an aesthetic achievement and an ethical practice. The narrative of illness and the aspects of body-self that appear in Jo Yong-mi’s poems on illness can be seen as a testimony to her illness through a narrative of unmediated chaos when confronted with a sick body for a long period of time and in a state of opposition to the body, and a narrative of exploration in which she accepts pain and creates a new body-self by combining with her own body. The narrative of chaos and the narrative of exploration at this time were not dichotomously separated, but coexisted as a story of living with illness. Jo Yong-mi’s poems on illness can be seen as a poetic practice that has continued life by discovering language that sheds the shell in the abyss of pain and creates a new body-self.
