메를로 퐁티의 '현상학적 몸' 개념을 통한 혼합현실 공간의 지각특성 연구 (A Study on the Perception in Mixed Reality Space through the Concept of 'Phenomenological Body' by Merleau-Ponty)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 오늘날 우리는 새로운 디지털 기술의 시대를 맞아 가상공간의 전례 없는 발전을 목격하고 있다. 메타버스는 인류 문명을 가상공간에 재현하고 우리의 경험을 확장하고 몰입시키고 있으며, 이는 인간의 존재와 경험의 차원에 큰 변화를 가져왔다. 이러한 맥락에서 가상현실기술의 하나인 혼합현실은 가상과 현실의 중간에서 이분관계를 깨는 특성을 보이는데, 이는 메를로 퐁티가 '현상학적 몸' 개념을 통해 데카르트적 심신의 이원론에 의문을 제기한 것과 일치한다. 본 연구의 목적은 메를로 퐁티의 '현상학적 몸' 개념에 대한 연구를 통해 혼합현실 환경에서의 신체개념의 변화와 정의를 제시하고, 신체감각이 혼합현실 공간에서 구현되는 지각특성을 탐구하는 것이다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 우선 메를로 퐁티의 '현상학적 몸' 개념에 대한 문헌 분석을 통해 메를로 퐁티의 '현상학적 몸'이 제시하는 특성을 정리하였다. 이후 혼합현실의 특성을 통해 혼합현실에서 신체가 지닌 새로운 개념을 정리하였다. 그런 다음 혼합현실 공간의 유형을 분석하고 재정의된 신체개념과 결합하여 혼합현실 공간에서의 신체와 공간의 상관관계 모델을 제시하였다. 혼합현실 공간의 특성과 표현 특징을 도출하여 도출된 특성을 혼합현실 공간의 분석의 틀로 정리하여 최근 5년동안 출현한 각 유형의 혼합현실 공간을 분석 평가하였다. (결과) 가상현실 환경에서 몸을 '코드화적 신체', '기술매개적 신체', '시뮬라크르적 신체'의 개념을 확장하여 신체에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시했다. 혼합현실 공간을 결합한 유형은 신체와 혼합현실 공간의 상호작용 모델을 제시하고, 새로운 신체 정의와 혼합공간 유형을 통해 '기술의 중간성', '감각의 불가분성', '체험의 비현실성'의 혼합공간 특성과 공간 표현을 도출했다. (결론) 혼합현실공간은 신체와의 상호작용을 통해 공간의 다양한 가능성을 창출하고 가상현실기술에 따른 신체와 공간의 관계를 철학적 관점에서 다시 생각해 보는 것이 미래의 가상공간 발전에 대한 연구를 촉진하는 역할을 하며, 본 연구는 혼합현실 기술에서 신체와 공간의 관계를 재인식하는 것을 강조하여 혼합현실 공간의 지각특성을 제시하고, 공간디자인의 관점에서 혼합현실 공간은 새로운 공간체험 유형으로 이해되어야 함을 제시함으로써, 점차 가상공간으로 그 영역을 넓히고 있는 공간디자인에서 확장된 감각적 경험에 의한 새로운 공간개념의 근간을 제시하는데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Today, we are witnessing an unprecedented development of virtual space in the era of new digital technologies. Metaverse reproduces human civilization in virtual space and expands and immerses our experiences, bringing about a big change in the dimension of human existence and experience. In this context, mixed reality, one of the virtual reality technologies, has the characteristic of breaking the dichotomy between virtual and reality, which is consistent with Merleau-Ponty's questioning of the Cartesian dualism of mind and body through the concept of “phenomenological body.” This study aims to suggest changes and definitions of the body concept in the mixed reality environment through the study of Merleau-Ponty's “phenomenological body” and to explore the perceptual characteristics of the body senses realized in the mixed reality space. (Method) First, this study arranged the characteristics suggested by Merleau-Ponty's “phenomenological body” through literature analysis of the concept of “phenomenological body.” Afterward, the new concept of the body in mixed reality was organized through the characteristics of mixed reality. Then, the type of mixed reality space was analyzed, and combined with the redefined body concept, a correlation model between the body and space in the mixed reality space was presented. Each type of mixed reality space that has emerged in the last five years was analyzed and evaluated by deriving the characteristics and expression characteristics of the mixed reality space and organizing the derived characteristics into the framework of analysis of the mixed reality space. (Results) In the virtual reality environment, the concepts of “coded body,” “technology-mediated body,” and “simulacra body” were expanded to present a new perspective on the body. The type that combines the mixed reality space presents an interaction model between the body and the mixed reality space, and through a new body definition and mixed space type, “in-betweenness of technology,” “inevitability of sensation,” and “unrealness of experience” are mixed. The spatial characteristics and spatial expression were derived. (Conclusions) Mixed reality space creates various possibilities of space through interaction with the body, and rethinking the relationship between body and space according to virtual reality technology from a philosophical point of view plays a role in facilitating research on the future development of virtual space. This study suggests the perceptual characteristics of mixed reality space by emphasizing the re-recognition of the relationship between body and space in mixed reality technology and that mixed reality space should be understood as a new type of spatial experience from the perspective of space design. It is meaningful to suggest the basis of a new spatial concept through extended sensory experience in spatial design, which is gradually expanding its domain into virtual space.
