횡단하는 물질, 사라지는 몸: ‘삼성반도체 백혈병 사건’ 텍스트 다시 읽기 (Transverse Matter, Disappearing Body: Re-reading the “Case of Leukemia at Samsung Semiconductor” Text)

초록

이 글의 목적은 삼성반도체 백혈병 사건을 기록하거나 재현한 텍스트를 대상으로 몸의 관계적이고 능동적인 물질성을 포착하는 것이다. 이 논문은 삼성반도체 백혈병 사건을 다룬 텍스트에서 약화된 몸의 의미를 비판적으로 재해석하고, 신유물론적 개념인 횡단-신체성을 통해 몸의 관계성과 물질의 생동성에 주목하였다. 첫째, 삼성반도체 백혈병 사건에서 노동자의 몸은 사회구성적으로 접근되었기 때문에 노동자계급의 몸, 삼성에 저항하는 몸, 독성화학물질에 공격받는 몸, 국가로부터 배제되는 몸으로서 정치적 의미에 집중되었다. 영화, 출판물, 그리고 ‘반올림’ 같은 단체의 실천에서 몸은 반삼성, 반정부의 정치적 효과를 목표로 한다. 이때 몸은 서사의 맥락에 따라 과도재현되거나 과소재현된다. 이러한 문화적·정치적 실천들은 역설적이게도 삼성반도체 노동자들의 몸을 사라지게 하는 역설적 효과를 낳았다.둘째, 스테이시 앨러이모의 횡단-신체성 개념은 몸을 환경과 분리되지 않을 뿐 아니라, 물질적 상호연결능력으로 파악한다. 삼성반도체 노동자들의 몸은 환경(독성물질, 설비, 반도체, 클린 룸 등)과 복잡하게 상호작용하는 과정을 보여준다. 노동자들의 증언에 따르면 몸과 화학물질, 반도체 공정작용, 공정설비, 작업환경, 팹이라는 작업장은 하나의 관계적 덩어리로 작용한다. 따라서 이들의 몸과 화학물질은 서로 관계적으로 활성화된다. 이렇게 보았을 때 삼성반도체 백혈병 사건에서 몸은 기존의 법적·정치적 몸뿐 아니라, 물질과 관계하는 새로운 존재론적 지평에 놓여질 수 있을 것이다. 또한 몸과 화학물질의 능동적 물질성에 주목하는 이 논문은 생명윤리의 개념적 확장과 학제적 다양성 확보에 기여할 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This study intended to capture the relational and active materiality of the body in the text that rekindles the case of leukemia at Samsung Semiconductor. This study critically reinterpreted the meaning of the weakened body in the text that dealt with this case and focused on the relationship of the body and the vitality of matters through trans-corporeality, which is a neomaterialistic concept.
First, since the body of the worker was approached in a socio-constructive manner in the case of leukemia at Samsung Semiconductor, it focused on the political meaning as the body of the working class, the body that resists Samsung, the body being attacked by toxic chemicals, and the body excluded from the state. In films, publications, and the practice of groups such as the SHARPS (Supporters for the Health And Rights of People in the Semiconductor industry), the body is over-represented or under-represented according to the context of the narrative. Paradoxically, these cultural and political practices had the effect of post-curing the bodies of workers at Samsung Semiconductor.
Second, the concept of trans-corporeality does not separate the body from the environment and understands it as a material inter-connectivity. The bodies of workers at Samsung Semiconductor show the process of complex interactions with the environment (toxic substances, facilities, semiconductors, clean rooms, fabs, and other workers). Their bodies and chemicals are activated relationally to each other. In this way, in the case of leukemia at samsung semiconductor, the body can be placed on a new ontological horizon related to material as well as the existing legal and political body. In addition, this paper, which focuses on the active materiality of the body and chemicals, is expected to contribute to the conceptual expansion of bioethics and the securing of interdisciplinary diversity.
