몸의 물질성과 섹슈얼리티: 이론과 영상 재현의 대응적 독해 (Corporeality and Sexuality: A Symmetrical Reading of Theories and Visual Representations)

초록

이 논문은 육체유물론적 관점에서 몸의 물질성이 섹슈얼리티와 맺는 연관성에 대한 이론적 논의를 검토하고 이러한 이론적 논의를 영상이미지의 재현을 분석하는데 적용함으로써 이론의 추상성이 재현적 내러티브 속에서 구체적인 설명력을 가질 수 있는지 그 가능성을 타진해보기 위해 기획되었다. 이를 위해 70년대의 산업화과정에서 사회적 지위가 낮은 여성이 온 몸으로 살아낸 과정을 그린 〈영자의 전성시대〉와 90년대 후반 섹슈얼리티에 대한 참신한 해석을 통해 여성의 성적 주체의 사례를 보여준 〈처녀들의 저녁식사〉를 이론적 논의와 대조시켜가면서 독해하는 재현 텍스트로 선정하였다. 대응적 독해의 방법론을 통해 몸, 노동, 그리고 섹슈얼리티를 여성주체형성의 세 가지 주요 구성요소로 이론적 논의를 해왔던 필자의 논의가 추상적 이론의 수준에 머물지 않고 현실과 밀착하여 좀더 설명력을 획득할 수 있었으며 이로써 영상재현으로 표현되는 여성 주체 형성의 다양한 전형을 살펴볼 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper is consisted of two analytical dimensions. Firstly, the relation of the theoretical discussions about corporeality with sexuality is scrutinized. Secondly, the theoretical framework is adopted into the analysis of visual representations in order to look for the possibility of explanation of abstract theory in the representative narratives, especially in two Korean movies, 〈The Golden Age of Youngja〉 and . The theoretical hypothesis which I built in my previous studies is: feminist subject is composed with three elements, body, labor, and sexuality. To prove this theoretical hyposis with practical level, I used the methodology of analysis, symmetrical reading and interpretation of theories and visual representations. It is a rare attempted methodology in the analysis of visual representations.
〈The Golden Age of Youngja〉 was made in 1975 in the middle of industrialization in Korea. The main character is a young woman named Youngja who settled down in Seoul as a poor laborer after moving from country side as many other young women at that time. She started her working path from a domestic helper. She went through factory worker, conductress of bus. Her working path led her even to prostitution. In the process of becoming mother she got the feeling of self-existence after all. It can be interpreted as the formation of sexual subject. Another movie, 〈Girls’ Night Out〉 deals with the outspoken sexual discourses between three women who are in the relation of friends. The movie is made with three episodes of three women, especially in the focus on the sexual attitude and opinion. The women have obviously different attitudes on sexuality and their lives. The formations of subject are different according to their different attitudes about sexuality. With this study the theory is more precisely explained and it looks possible to build up the connection between theory and practice.
