아함에 나타난 몸 관찰 수행방법의 순차성 (The Order of Body Observing Meditation in Agama)

초록

아함을 위시한 초기불교의 수행법 내용의 특징 중 하나는 몸을 관찰하는 身念處을 중심으로 기술된다는 점이다. 초기불교는 다양한 수행법을 제시하고 있음에도 불구하고, 구체적인 내용을 담는 부분은 몸을 위주로 하는 수행방법이었으며, 이는 몸에 대한 관찰 방법이 정확해야만 다른 순차적인 수행이 가능하였기 때문일 것이다.
그래서 본 논문은 초기경전에 나타난 몸 관찰 수행법은 몸의 내부를 관찰하는 內身에 국한되지 않고 다음 단계의 4界(또는 6界)와 外身의 시체관찰에 이르러야 완성됨을 밝히는 데에 있으며, 이는 훗날 발전된 5정심의 부정관수행법의 기본 모델이 됨을 밝히고자 한다.
구체적인 몸 관찰 방법론은 중아함에 2군데, 잡아함에 1군데, 증일아함에 1군데, 장아함에 1군데에서 언급하고 있고, 팔리문 대념처경에서 자세하게 기술하고 있다. 그러나 이들 경전에 나타난 내용들은 내신관찰의 내용 부분에서 일치하고, 차제적인 수행방법 부분은 약간씩 다르게 나타난다. 대념처경은 중아함의 내용 보다는 오히려 증일아함의 내용과 흡사하게 기술되고, 각각 경전에 나타난 시신관찰의 순차적 내용도 다소 다르게 나타난다.

영어초록

One of the features in meditation techniques in early Buddhism which expresses a lot in Agama is an emphasis onobserving the body, Kayanupassana. Even though early Buddhism suggested diverse meditation techniques, it was Kayanupassana that developed detailed instructions for practice. Only after the way of observing the body has been correctly established is meditation possible. This paper reveals that the completion of Kayanupassana lies not only in observing inside the body but also in observing dhatu (elements) and the nine charnel ground contemplations and it becomes the basis of Wu-Ting-Hsin-Kuan and other evolved meditation techniques. The details of the method of Kayanupassana are mentioned twice in Madhyama Agama in Sanskrit, once inSamyukta Agama and Ekottara Agama in Sanskrit, and also in Mahasatipatthana sutta in Dighanikaya in Pali. However, the details are slightly different depending on which book one reads.


Even though They all talk about the order of observing the body, first inside the body, followed by observing the dhatuyo (elements), and finally the nine charnel ground contemplations and have same interpretation of observinginside the body (e.g. organs), techniques in observing elements and orders in the nine charnel ground contemplations are somewhat different between them. For example, Ekottara Agama and the Mahasatipatthana sutta in the Palinese Dighanikaya talk about observing 4 dhatuyo (elements) while Madhyama Agama refers to6 dhatuyo (elements) and the Palinese version of the Mahasatipatthana sutta in Dighanikaya have a different order of the nine charnel ground contemplations compared with Agamas.


The order of observing the body in the early Buddhism (first inside the body, then the elements (mahabhutani),and finally the nine charnel ground contemplations) was a whole view of Kayanupassana and made a new development called Wu-Ting-Hsin-Kuan. The development of observing inside the body comes to observation ofexternal body, the nine charnel ground contemplations, and the charnel ground contemplations mentioned in Agama can be seen as the basis of the Nine Images Observation which is emphasized in Chinese Buddhism.
