초록

본고는 조선후기 한문 문헌을 토대로 조선조 피지배계급의 비공식적 여론 형성 및 유포에 대해 고찰한다. 조선조 지배계급은 정치 사회 문제에 대한 자신의 집단적 목소리를 낼 수 있는 제도적 장치와 문화 자본을 갖고 있었던 반면 피지배계급에게는 그런 것이 결여되었다. 하지만 조선조 피지배계급은 정치 사회 문제에 대한 자신의 집단적 의견을 형성하고 유포하는 비제도적 방법을 강구하는 행위주체성을 발휘했다.
조선조 피지배계급의 여론 형성 및 유포의 비공식적 방법은 언어적 차원과 비언어적 차원으로 구분할 수 있다. 비언어적 차원은 ‘농사 거부’ 내지 ‘농작물 뽑아버리기’ 같이 관아의 수탈에 대한 저항의식을 직접 행동으로 보여준 것이다. 언어적 차원의 사례로는 ‘소문내기’, ‘善政碑 역이용하기’, ‘별명 붙이기’, ‘비꼬아 부르기’ 등이 있다. 이는 지배 관계에 속박된 예속민이 지배질서에 대한 저항의식을 공개적으로 밝히지 못하는 대신 비공식적으로 드러내거나, 공식적인 수단을 역으로 전유한 것이다.
그 밖에도 조선조 피지배계급의 집단적 목소리를 간단명료한 문장으로 압축한 것으로 ‘속담’을 들 수 있다. 본고는 조선조 피지배계급의 저항의식을 담고 있는 속담이 실학 담론에 이입된 사례에 특히 주목하여, 속담에 남겨진 조선조 피지배계급의 저항의식을 분석하는 동시에 정약용 같은 실학자가 백성의 집단적 목소리에 공명하여 어떤 정치론을 개진했는지를 탐구한다. 정약용 같은 사례를 통해, 조선 사회에서 지배계급과 피지배계급은 ‘지배/피지배’라는 이분법적 관계에 놓이면서도 꼭 그렇게 단순화할 수 없는 복합적인 상호작용을 했다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

Based on the documents of the late Joseon Dynasty, this paper examines the formation and distribution of public opinion among the ruled class of the Joseon Dynasty. The ruling class of the Joseon Dynasty had institutional mechanisms and cultural capital to publicize their collective voices on political and social issues, while the ruled class lacked such a thing. However, the ruled class of the Joseon Dynasty demonstrated the agency by devising an uninstitutional method of forming and distributing their collective opinions on political and social issues.
The informal method of forming and distributing public opinion of the ruled class of the Joseon Dynasty can be divided into a linguistic dimension and a non-verbal dimension. The non-verbal dimension shows the resistant consciousness to exploitation of government offices, such as "refusal to farm" or "pulling out crops," through direct action. Examples of the linguistic dimension include "spreading rumors," "the reverse use of the tombstone," "nicknaming" and "calling sarcastically." This is an informal expression of resistance to the ruling order, instead of being unable to publicly express the resistant consciousness to the ruling order.
In addition, the proverb is noteworthy because it compresses the collective voice of the ruled class of the Joseon Dynasty into simple and clear sentences. This paper focuses on the case where the proverb, which contains the resistant consciousness of the Joseon Dynasty's ruled class, is reflected in the Silhak discourse, and analyzes the resistant consciousness of the Joseon Dynasty's ruled class, while exploring what political thinking such as Jeong Yak-yong expressed in response to the collective voice of the people. Through the case of Jeong Yak-yong, it is confirmed that in Joseon society, the ruling class and the ruled class had a complex interaction that was not necessarily simplified even though they were in a dichotomous relationship of 'dominance/subordinance'.
