조선후기 종묘 신실 내 목공예품의 종류와 제작실태:『부묘도감의궤』를 중심으로 (The Forms and Production Conditions of the Wooden Craftwork for the Rituals Furnished inside the Niche at Jonmyo(宗廟) in the late Joseon Dynasty: Focused on BumyoDogam Uigwe(祔廟都監儀軌))

초록

종묘는 조선 왕실의 사당이고, 600년간 종묘제례가 이어진 유교 문화의 정수로 유네스코 세계문화유산이다. 조선의 국왕과 왕비는 사후 삼년상이 지나면 왕실은 그들의 혼이 담긴 신주를 종묘에 모셔서 조상신으로 삼아 제례를 드렸다. 본고는 그들의 신주를 종묘에 모실 때마다 그 전말을 기록한 『부묘도감의궤』의 내용을 분석하여 종묘 신실 내부에 배치되어 있는 의물의 종별과 목공예품의 제작실태를 다음과 같이 밝혔다. 우선 부묘 때의 의물 중 상당수는 국왕의 국상 때 제작하여 혼전에서 3년간 사용하던 것을 종묘로 옮겨서 그대로 사용하는 것을 알게 되었다. 그러나 종묘의 신실 중앙에 놓을 목제 의물은 부묘 때마다 새로 제작하였다. 신주를 놓는 신주장, 그 좌우에 도장을 담는 보장과 어책을 넣는 책장, 그 앞에는 제례 때 신주를 꺼내놓는 신탑 등이 그것이다. 이러한 목공예품은 제작 방식이 규정되어 있었는데, 특히 19세기 부묘도감의궤에는 그것의 그림과 함께 형태나 크기 및 색상이 설명되어 있었다. 이에 따라 종묘 신실 내 목공예품은 시대가 흘러도 거의 변하지 않고 자체의 형식미를 유지하면서 조선왕실의 위엄을 고스란히 보여주고 있다. 그러나 조선이 멸망한 지 100여 년이 지난 현재, 종묘의 의물들은 훼손되거나 원래의 자리에서 박물관으로 이관되어 그 상징적 가치를 잃고 말았다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 그것의 원형을 고증하여 향후 유물을 수리하거나 복원할 때 도움이 되고, 조선왕실의 찬란한 문화가 후손에게 계속 이어지길 기대해본다.

영어초록

Jongmyo is the shrine of the royal ancestors of the Joseon Dynasty which has remained to this day. As the quintessence of the Confucian culture that supported the Joseon Dynasty for 600 years, Jongmyo and the royal ancestral ritual at the Jongmyo Shrine are appropriately listed as the UNESCO World Heritage. In the Joseon Dynasty, when three years had elapsed after the death of the king or the queen, then ancestral tablets in which their spirits were believed to indwell were enshrined in the Jongmyo Shrine. The royal court believed that such proprieties, as the idea of Confucianism, could be practiced by permanently performing the ancestral rites for these ancestral spirits. Such a belief was why the royal government established and managed the provisional agency known as the BumyoDogam(祔廟都監). Whenever the ancestral tablet was to be enshrined in the Jongmyo Shrine, the role of the council was to produce a variety of craftwork that would be installed in the casket for a memorial tablet of the ancestral spirits inside the main niche. The types and production conditions of the craftwork were found through an analysis of BumyoDogam Uigwe, a record of the details of the time. The analysis showed that the case for the memorial tablets for the king or queen in the form of wooden craftwork was placed in the middle of the casket for the memorial tablets. On the left and right of it lies a chest for the royal seals or a chest for the jadebooks. Also, the table on which the ancestral tablets were placed for every royal ancestral ritual still remains. To produce these, the Council arranged the finest materials and tools and called on the best artisans. Since these wooden crafts always followed particular precedents, they were created in standardized forms and sizes and colored in red. Eventually, the indention of these details revealed the dignity of the royal family of the Joseon Dynasty. However, over the course of time, some of them have been severely damaged while the majority of them are not located where they are supposed to stand in the Jongmyo Shrine. Therefore, this paper aims to support the repair or restoration of the original forms of the artifacts in the future by studying the historical evidence of the initial forms and discovering the production conditions through an analysis of the Royal Protocols of the Royal Ancestral Temple Enshrinement Supervisory Council. Thus, it is expected that the glorious royal culture of the Joseon Dynasty will in time be passed on to its decedents.
