빠알리어 동사의 법에 관한 『목갈라나 문법』의 규칙과 예시 분석 (An Analysis on Rules and Examples of Moggallāna-vyākaraṇa: with reference to Pāli Moods)

초록

본고의 목적은 빠알리어 동사의 법에 관한 『목갈라나 문법(MV)』의 규칙 MV 6.7-6.12를 <규칙>, <해설>, <예시> 순으로 번역·분석하여 법 어미군의 활용범위를 살펴보고, 규칙 내 예시단어를 형태론적으로도 분석하여 동사의 법에 관한 빠알리어 문법을 다각도로 이해하는 것이다.
동사의 법에 관한 MV의 규칙은 tvādayo, eyyādayo, ssādayo라는 ‘어미군’ 중심으로 전개되고 있으며, 규칙들은 각 어미군에 따른 활용범위를 제시하고 있다. tvādayo는 일반적으로 말하는 명령법의 어미군이고, eyyādayo는 원망법, 그리고 ssādayo는 조건법의 어미군이다. MV는 구체적인 설명과 풍부한 예문을 통해 법 어미군이 문장에서 살려내는 의미들을 제시한다. 그런데 tvādayo는 eyyādayo의 활용범위에, eyyādayo는 ssādayo의 활용범위에 포함되기 때문에 법 어미군에 따른 활용범위가 독자적인 범위로 뚜렷하게 구분되지는 않는다. 따라서 법 어미군이 사용된 문장은 활용범위의 여러 가능성을 염두에 두고 앞 뒤 문맥을 잘 헤아려야만 말하는 것에 대한 화자의 태도를 제대로 파악할 수 있다.
본고는 MV 6.7-6.12의 예문에 대한 의미론적 접근에서 더 나아가 예문 내 법 어미가 사용된 동사의 형태론적 분석을 시도하였다. 어근에서부터 완성된 동사 형태가 되기까지는 어근과 법 어미의 결합을 비롯하여 다양한 규칙들이 적용된다. 예시단어의 형태론적 분석은 단어 형성, 나아가 문장 형성을 위한 규칙들 간의 유기적 관계를 파악할 수 있고 MV 6.7-6.12를 다양한 각도로 이해할 수 있는 방법이다.

영어초록

The purpose of the present paper is to analyse the grammatical rules and the related examples of Moggallāna-vyākaraṇa(MV) with reference to grammatical moods in Pāli. In order to understand Pāli grammar in various angles, the analytical approach on the grammatical rules and the related examples is attempted not only from the semantic perspective but also the morphologic perspective. As a result of the analysis, the following three points are observed: Firstly, MV develops the rules regarding grammatical moods with emphasis on the group of mood suffixes, namely, tvādayo(tu etc., viz., the suffix group beginning with the suffix tu), eyyādayo(eyya etc., viz., the suffix group beginning with the suffix eyya), and ssādayo(ssā etc., viz., the suffix group beginning with the suffix ssā); not with emphasis on moods, namely, the imperative mood, the optative mood, and the conditional mood. Therefore MV presents the scope of use according to the group of mood suffixes, not the group of mood suffixes according to the grammatical moods.
Secondly, the scope of use according to the group of mood suffixes is not completely independent, although there is a division. The scope of use for tvādayo is included in that for eyyādayo, and scope of use for eyyādayo is included in that for ssādayo. Therefore when one encounters the sentence used by the group of mood suffixes, one should grasp the speaker's attitude by carefully reading the context. The approach such as 'tvādayo is used in the imperative mood, eyyādayo is used in the optative mood, ssādayo is used in the conditional mood.' is not always proper if the definition and classification of the grammatical moods in Pali are not based on Pāli.
Thirdly, the grammatical rules, that presents the scope of use according to the group of mood suffixes, provides the examples used by the related suffixes. However, even if the suffixes join the grammatical roots, they do not become the complete verb forms. A variety of grammatical rules such as 'adding or dropping of the conjugational sign', 'change or dropping of the last phoneme of the verbal root', 'change of the vowel', etc. are applied from the roots in order to make the completed verb form. Therefore the morphological analysis of the verb-forms as examples in the grammatical rules is a way to approach Pāli grammar in systematic way and clarify it.
