익산 미륵사의 입지와 불탑 축조 - 목탑지 최근 발굴조사 내용을 중심으로 - (Location and Construction of a Pagoda at Mireuk Temple in Iksan - Focusing on The Recent Excavation of Wooden Pagoda Site -)

초록

본 연구에서는 최근 발굴조사 내용을 토대로 미륵사 사역 내 미지형상의 특징이 불탑의 축조공정과 관련하여 유의미한 상관관계를 가지는지 살펴보고자 하였다.
중원 목탑지는 사역의 중앙에 흐르는 곡부를 메우는 과정에서 축조되었던 것으로 파악된다. 목탑지 기초부는 성토이전퇴적층을 삭토 및 정지한 다음 기초부 범위 안에 할석과 사질점토를 쌓아 올린 구조로, 기단 하부의 배수를 원활히 하고 지면의 높이를 높이는 작업이 가장 먼저 이루어진 것으로 판단된다. 이후 목탑지 외곽에는 사역의 대지를 조성하여 목탑지의 외곽 경계이자 기단토 및 석축시설 외부의 성토층이 밀리지 않도록 보강하기 위한 지지층으로 삼았다. 기단부의 성토 방식은 목탑지의 사방 경계에 석축시설을 쌓은 다음 내부는판축하고 외부는 석축시설을 지지하기 위해 수평 및 경사 성토를 병행한 것으로 확인된다.
이에 반해 동·서원에 위치한 동·서석탑은 목탑지의 외곽에 조성된 사역대지조성층을 굴광한 다음 기초부가 만들어진 것으로 파악되었다. 기초부 안에는 할석과 사질점토를 층층이 토석다짐하여 배수를 원활히 하고상부 구조물을 지지하기 위한 단단한 기반을 조성하였다. 따라서 사역대지조성 이전에 기초부의 조성이 완료된 목탑과 사역대지조성층을 굴광하고 기초부가 조성된 동·서석탑의 축조 양상은 목탑과 동·서석탑의 선후관계를 추정할 수 있는 근거 자료로 판단된다.
익산 미륵사는 미륵산 정상에서 서남쪽으로 이어진 두 자락의 낮은 능선 사이에 위치하여, 사원의 중앙에 자연 하천이 생성되기 유리한 자연지형적인 조건을 가지고 있다. 따라서 미륵사 불탑의 축조 순서 및 축조 방법의 차이는 사원의 조성 과정이 사역 내 미지형상의 특징을 고려하여 중앙의 곡부를 메우는 작업부터 시작되었기 때문에 발생한 것으로 추정된다.

영어초록

Based on the recent excavations, this study tried to examine whether the features of the micro-geography within the Mireuk Temple have a meaningful correlation with the construction process of the pagoda.
It was identified that the wooden pagoda in middle area was built in the process of filling the curved part that flows in the center of the temple. The foundation of the wooden pagoda has a structure in which the sedimentary layer before filling is cut and cleared, and then broken stone and sandy clay are piled up within the range of the foundation.
It is judged that the work to facilitate drainage of the lower part of the base and to raise the height of the ground was done first. Afterwards, the temple ground was created on the outskirts of the wooden pagoda to serve as the outer boundary of the wooden pagoda and as a supporting layer to reinforce the base soil and the fill layer outside the stonework facility from being pushed. It is confirmed that the filling method of the base part is to build stonework facilities at the four-way boundary of the wooden pagoda, then cut the inside, and perform horizontal and inclined filling in parallel to support the stonework facility outside.
On the other hand, it was found that the foundations of the stone pagodas located in the eastern and western area were made after digging the temple ground on the outskirts of the wooden pagoda site. In the foundation part, broken stones and sandy clay were compacted layer by layer to facilitate drainage and create a solid foundation to support the upper structure. Therefore, the construction pattern of the wooden pagoda with the foundation completed before the construction of the work site and the east and west stone pagodas with the foundation formed after excavating the base for the work site is judged as the basis for estimating the relationship between the wooden pagoda and the east and west stone pagodas.
Mireuk Temple in Iksan is located between the low ridges of the two ridges connected to the southwest from the summit of Mireuk Mountain, so it has favorable natural topographical conditions for a natural stream to be created in the center of the temple.
The difference in the construction order and method of the Mireuk pagoda is presumed to be due to the fact that the construction process of the temple started with the filling of the central curve in consideration of the microgeographic features of the temple.
