오대산 상원사 문수전 목조제석천상의 연구 (Study on wooden Indra Statue at the Manjushri Hall of Sangwonsa Temple in Pyeongchang)

초록

본 논문은 오대산 상원사 문수전 목조제석천상에 관한 것으로 복장 유물의분석과 조선 전기 불상과의 양식 비교를 통해 상원사 문수동자상과 함께 1466년에 조성되었다는 사실을 추론한 것이다.
오대산 상원사 목조제석천상의 복장 유물을 분석하고 양식 특징을 비교·분석하여 다음과 같은 내용을 확인하였다.
첫째, 상원사가 위치한 오대산의 오대(五臺)에서는 여러 존상 가운데 제석천상이 조선시대 이전부터 신앙의 대상이었다.
둘째, 상원사 목조제석천상에서 수습된 복장 유물 중 경전은 15세기에 간행되었고, 후령통 내부에 납입되었던 것으로 추정되는 오보병의 물목(物目)과 납입방식은 16세기에 왕실에서 발원한 불상과 유사하였다.
셋째, 「상원사중수기」에는 1644 - 1645년에 7구의 불보살상을 중수했다는 기록이 있고, 발원문(1645년)의 양공(良工)으로 참여한 승려들이 조각승이 아니라 화승이라는 점 등을 종합해 보면 상원사 목조제석천상은 1645년에 처음 조성된것이 아니라 중수된 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 중수발원문(1645년)에는 소현세자의 극락왕생을 발원하는 내용과 왕실 인물들이 다수 시주자로 참여한 사실이 기록되어 있다.
넷째, 상원사 목조제석천상의 조성 시기는 1466년으로 추정된다. 상원사 문수동자상 발원문(1466년)의 ‘천제석왕’을 조성했다는 기록과, 상원사 문수동자상 및 조선 전기 불상과의 양식 특징 등을 통해 상원사 문수동자상과 함께 1466년에 목조제석천상이 조성된 것으로 추정하였다.

영어초록

This paper was written to reveal that the wooden Indra statue enshrined at the Manjushri Hall of Sangwonsa Temple was created in 1466 at the same time as the statue of youthful Manjushri.
The following facts were confirmed through analysis of the Bokjang of Indra (relics from the inside of the Indra statue) and comparative analysis of stylistic features of Indra with the youthful Manjushri in this temple and other Buddhist statues created in the early Joseon Dynasty.
In the Odae of Odaesan Mountain, among many Buddhist statues, Indra statue has been the object of faith since before the Joseon Dynasty.
Among the relics of Bokjang, Buddhist scriptures were printed in the 15th century, and the items contained in the Obobyung (presumed to have been put inside the Huryungtong) and the method of putting them in were similar to the Obobyeong of Buddist statues sponsored by the royal family in the 16th century.
In the “Repair Record” of Sangwonsa Temple, there is a record that when the Sangwonsa Temple was repaired between 1644 and 1645, seven statues of Budda and Bodhisattva were also repaired. According to the “Balwonmun on Maintenance and Repair (1645)” of Indra statue, the monks who participated in the repair work of statues were painter monks, not sculptors. Taken these facts together, it can be confirmed that the Indra statue was repaired in 1645 and not created at that time. In the “Balwonmun on Maintenance and Repair (1645)”, the wishes for Prince Sohyun’s rebirth of paradise and the fact that many members of the royal family participated as sponsors are recorded.
It is believed that the Indra statue at the Manjushri Hall of Sangwonsa Temple was created in 1466. Through the record of the creation of ‘天帝釋王’ in the “Balwonmun on Creation(1466)” of youthful Majushri and the comparison of stylistic features with other Buddhist statues created in the early Josen Dynasty, it was estimated that the wooden Indra statue enshrined at the Manjushri Hall of Sangwonsa Temple was created in 1466 at the same time as the statue of youthful Manjushri in this temple.
