‘유관순’을 호명하는 몇몇 시선과 목소리 (A few eyes and voices calling for ‘Ryu Gwan–Soon’)

초록

이 논문은 3⋅1만세운동 당시 거의 알려져 있지 않은 유관순이 해방기 이후 애국과 저항과 희생을 대표하는 민족적 영웅으로 떠오르게 되는 과정과 원인을 밝히고자 했다. 유관순은 ‘순국처녀’에서 ‘누나’를 거쳐 ‘열사’로 호명되며 새로운 나라 만들기에 필요한 국민의 동원 및 거기 필요한 국민교육의 모본으로 자리 잡게 된다. 본고는 이 과정을 다음과 같은 순서로 고찰했다. 첫째, 유관순 관련 시와 이야기, 위인전(전기문)과 노래, 생활문을 살펴가며 그녀가 국가주의적 이념과 사상에 부응하는 ‘잘 만들어진 영웅’으로 조형되는 과정을 살폈다. 둘째, 전기문을 ‘타자가 쓴 자서전’이라는 관점아래 이야기의 사실성 못지않게 저자가 독자에게 전하려는 계몽의 언술, 그를 위한 역사적 변이가 중요하다는 것을 연구방법으로 전제했다. 이와 관련된 ‘유관순 이야기’의 요소를 다음과 같이 추출했다. 하나, 유관순의 영웅적 면모가 잔 다르크 및 기독교와의 통합을 통해 입체화되고 있다는 것에 주목했다. 하지만 잔 다르크는 근대계몽기에는 ‘애국의 신여성’으로, 일제 말 체제 협력자들에게는 ‘군국의 여성’으로 칭송되다가 해방기 이후 유관순과의 연관성 아래 성스러운 애국자상으로 다시 전유되었다. 둘째, ‘신체의 훼손’과 ‘시신의 자리’라는 핵심어를 통해 희생과 보상으로 접속되는 유관순의 영웅화 과정을 살폈다. 유관순의 여성성 강조함으로써 오히려 그 신성성과 민족성을 더욱 드높이는 역설적인 죽음의 성화(聖化)였다는 것이 잠정적 결론이다. 한편 『국어』와 『음악』 교과서에 실린 유관순 이야기와 노래가 어떻게 성장기 학생들의 내면에 착근하게 되는지를 교과서 수록 내용의 변이 과정, 삽화와의 연관성을 통해 검토했다. 마지막으로 유관순 이야기의 교과서 수록을 둘러싼 두 가지의 군사정권 대 국민 간의 갈등과 대립, 타협 과정을 살펴보았다. 이것은 1960년대의 6⋅3사태, 1980년대의 교과서 왜곡 문제 등 과거의 식민 주체 일본과의 관계 속에서 야기된 문제였다. 이 지점, 유관순이 정치적⋅이념적 기호이자 국가주의적⋅민족주의적 표상으로서의 숙명을 피할 수 없는 존재임을 새삼 확인시킨다.

영어초록

This thesis attempted to shed light on the process and causes that made Ryu Gwan–Sun, who was barely known during the time of the March 1st Independence Movement, rise as a national hero who represents patriotism, resistance, and sacrifice after the liberation. Called a ‘sacrificial maiden’, then ‘older sister’, and then ‘patriotic martyr’, Ryu Gwan–Soon takes position as an example for the mobilization of people needed in making a new nation and the national education needed for that. This article examined this process with the following order. First, it observed the process in which she was shaped into a ‘well-made hero’ who fulfills nationalistic ideologies and thoughts by observing poetry, stories, biographies (biographical writing) and songs, and life writings about Ryu Gwan–Soon. Second, it established a research method under the premise that, under the perspective that biographical writing is ‘an autobiography written by another person’, the statement of enlightenment as the writer wishes to pass on to the reader and the historical transitions for that are just as important as the truth of the story. Elements of ‘the story of Ryu Gwan–Soon’ in relation to this were extracted as follows. First, it focused on the fact that the heroic appearance of Ryu Gwan–Soon was given shape through Joan of Arc and the integration with Christianity. However, Joan of Arc was praised as a ‘modern woman of patriotism’ in the modern enlightenment period and as ‘a woman of a nation at war’ by allies of the late Japanese imperialist system and then she was reestablished as a sacred patriot in connection with Ryu Gwan–Soon after the liberation. Second, the process of which Ryu Gwan–Soon became a hero, which can be connected with sacrifice and reward, was observed through the key phrases of ‘damage to the body’ and ’the location of the dead body’. The provisional conclusion made here is that the emphasis of the femininity of Ryu Gwan–Soon became a paradoxical sanctification of her death which heightened her sacred character and nationality. On one hand, examinations were made of how Ryu Gwan–Soon stories and songs in Korean Language(『국어』) and Music (『음악』)textbooks take root in the inner worlds of students in their growth periods through the transitional process of textbook contents and through associations with illustrations. Lastly, observations were made of two processes of conflict, opposition, and compromise between the military regime and the people surrounding the textbook contents of the story of Ryu Gwan–Soon. These issues were the June 3rd situation of the 1960s and textbook content distortion issues of the 1980s which were caused within relations with Japan, the principal agent which colonized Korea in the past. Here, it is confirmed that Ryu Gwan–Soon was a figure who could not avoid her destiny of becoming a political and ideological symbol and nationalistic representation.
