    초록

This study aims to investigate the effects of college students' perceived support from their fathers and mothers in relation to the tendency to overindulge in social media, and to test the mediating effects of perceived validation from others. College students enrolled in four-year colleges currently using social media were invited to participate in an online survey from May 20-26, 2017; a total of 384 respondents were selected for analysis. SPSS Statistics 23.0 and AMOS 22.0 were used for data analysis, and boot-strapping was used to test for mediating effects. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, college students' perceived support from their fathers negatively corresponded with needing validation from others and the tendency to overindulge in social media. Although support from mothers negatively corresponded with the tendency to overindulge in social media, its relationship with needing validation from others was not statistically significant. Overindulgence in social media negatively corresponded with support from fathers and support from mothers, and positively correlated with needing validation from others. Second, when the mediating effects of receiving validation from others was explored in the relationship between college students' perceived support from their fathers and the tendency to overindulge in social media, receiving validation from others was found to be a full mediator between support from fathers and the tendency to overindulge in social media. Moreover, although support from mothers directly influenced the tendency to overindulge in social media, it did not exert its influence in terms of needing validation from others, and thus was not statistically significant. This study is significant as it found that a supportive attitude from fathers is an important variable that decreases the need for validation from others, which, in turn, exerts significant influence on college students' tendency to overindulge in social media. The findings of this study will be useful as educational data for prevention and consultation for college students who report issues related to tendencies to overindulge in social media and need for validation from others.
