초록

The professional beauticians had already existed since at least 1497 at the era of King Yeonsan in Joseon Dynasty.
They were called ‘Soomo’ that means ‘woman servants who trim one’s hair’. Soomo was the specialists who coordinated bride’s hair, make-up and clothes. They also played role in progressing the ceremony in keeping with the courtesy.
Accordingly, they were not only beauticians but also total coordinators. Although their field of activities was the outside of the palace, they were called-out to the various royal ceremonies. ‘Soomo’ had performed vigorous professional activities, building a wide personal network with administrators or the upper class and making large income at the extremely restricted society to woman in Joseon Dynasty.
