17·18세기 서학서 연구의 몇 문제에 대하여 (On a few questions about the study of 17th and 18th century’s Western Learning Books)

초록

17·18세기는 동아시아에 서학이 형성되고 발전하였던 시기이다. 유럽의 예수회 선교사들이 중국으로 진출하면서 계기가 마련되었고, 중국 지식인들의 관심과 상호교섭을 통해 발전하였다. 그 결실이 서학서이다. 서학서 안에는 기독교 신학과 서구 철학 등의 사상적 영역과 천문·수학·역사·지리 등의 자연과학적 영역이 두루 포함되어 있다. 그러나 당시 “天學”이라고 불렀던 서학은 자연학을 형이상적인 신학이나 철학과 별개의 학문으로 인식한 것이 아니라, 자연학을 통해 신의 섭리를 인식할 수 있다는 통합적인 학문체계를 지니고 있었다. 그럼에도 청나라 시기 『사고전서』 편찬자의 서학에 대한 비평관과 이와 연장선상에 있었던 19세기말 동도서기론에 의해 서학은 이른바 “西敎”와 “西器”로 분리되고 말았다. 문제는 오늘날 서학을 연구하는 우리들도 이런 시각을 고수해 왔다는 점이다. 그러므로 조선지식계와 서학의 사상적 교섭은 접어둔 채 자연과학의 수용에 주된 관심을 두었고, 이로 인해 조선 지식계와 서학의 영향 관계를 올바로 이해하는 데 한계가 있었다고 본다. 본 연구는 이러한 시각에 문제제기를 하고자 한다.
또한 이와 함께 서학서에 대한 書誌的 검토의 오류를 짚어보았다. 일반적으로 17·18세기 서학서가 모두 서양 선교사들의 저작으로 알고 있다. 그러나 거기에는 선교사와 중국 지식인의 공동저술도 있고, 중국 지식인의 저술도 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 이 사실이 17·18세기 서학과 동양 지식계의 관계를 단순히 “전달과 수용”으로 설명해 왔던 논리에 대해 당시 서구 지식을 수용하고 변용하고자 했던 동양 지식인들의 주체적 역할을 정당하게 평가하는 단초를 열어 줄 것으로 기대한다. 또 한편 17·18세기 서학서 연구에 새로운 활기가 살아나기를 기대하며, 향후 서학서 번역에 관한 소박한 제언도 덧붙여 보았다.

영어초록

The 17th and 8th centuries is when Western studies were formed and developed in East Asia. As European Jesuit missionaries entered China, an opportunity was provided, and it developed through the interest and mutual negotiations of Chinese intellectuals. The result is Western leaning books. This books includes ideological areas such as Christian theology and Western philosophy, as well as natural science areas such as astronomy, mathematics, history, and geography. However, the Western Learning which was called "Celestial Learning[天學]" at the time, did not recognize natural science as a separate discipline from ideal theology or philosophy, but had an integrated academic system that could recognize God's providence through natural science. Nevertheless, in the Qing Dynasty, the so-called "Western Religion[西敎]" and "Western Tools[西器]" were separated by the 『Siku Quanshu(四庫全書)』editor's critique of the Western Learning and the theory of Western tool in Eastern thought at the end of the 19th century, which was an extension of it. The problem is that those who study the Western Learning today have adhered to this perspective. Therefore, the main focus was on the acceptance of natural science, leaving aside the ideological negotiations between the Joseon intellectual community and the Western Learning. And it seems that there was a limit to properly understanding the relationship between the Joseon intellectual community and the Western Learning. This study attempts to raise a problem from this perspective.
In addition, the errors that occurred in the bibliographic review of the Western Learning books were also pointed out. In general, this books in the 17th and 18th centuries are known as the works of Western missionaries. However, it can be confirmed that there are joint writings between missionaries and Chinese intellectuals, as well as writings by Chinese intellectuals. This fact will open the door for the legitimate evaluation of the subjective role of Eastern intellectuals who sought to accept and transform Western knowledge at the time for logic that had simply explained the relationship between Western studies and Eastern knowledge in the 17th and 18th centuries as "transmission and acceptance." On the other hand, I hope that new vitality will be revived in the study of Western Learning books in the 17th and 8th centuries, and I added simple suggestions for translating books in the future.
