渤海 기와 硏究의 推移와 몇 가지 斷想 (Trend of Studies and Some Considerations regarding Roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdom)

초록

발해 기와의 고고학적 연구는 매우 미진한 분야에 속한다. 상경성, 서고성, 팔련성, 육정산고분군 등발해 유적의 발굴보고서가 발간되면서, 발해 기와의 종합적인 연구가 가능하게 되었다. 이 글에서는우선 남·북한, 중국, 러시아, 일본 등의 발해 기와의 연구 성과를 시기별로 검토해 보았으며, 앞으로의본격적인 연구를 위한 몇 가지 의견을 제시하였다.
발해 기와의 연구는 대략 4시기로 구분할 수 있다. 1기(1930~40년대)는 일본인에 의해 연구가 주도되어 기와의 문양과 형태 등을 검토하였으며, 연구 토대가 마련되어 학사적 의미를 둘 수 있는 시기이다. 2기(1950~70년대)는 조·중공동발굴대에 의해 중국 동북지역의 광범위한 발굴이 이루어진 시기로평기와에 시문된 압인, 문자 등을 주목하기 시작하였다. 3기(1980~90년대)는 연구가 급증하였으며 북한과 중국, 남한과 러시아의 공동조사 성과가 가시화된 시기이다. 특히 남 북한에서는 와당 분석을 통해발해 기와가 고구려와 통일신라의 영향을 받았음을 밝혔다. 4기(2000년 이후)는 중국의 동북공정이 본격화되면서 여러 나라에서 연구가 촉발되었으며, 조사지역도 연해주까지 넓어지고 기와의 명문 서체, 수막새 문양별 검토 등 연구가 세분화된 점이 특징이다. 선행 연구의 추이를 토대로 주요 논점을 살펴보면, 발해 기와의 종류와 용어 문제, 분류기준의 명확성 제시, 암키와와 암막새의 개념 문제, 발해사 상와당의 변천 과정, 기와의 상징성과 의례성 등을 들 수 있다. 이러한 논점이 단기간에 해결되기는 힘들겠지만, 점진적으로 연구된다면 발해인의 생활상을 복원하는데 큰 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

Archeological studies on the roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdom have been hardlymadein the past. As excavation reports on the relics of the Balhae Kingdom in Sanggyeong Castle, Seogo Castle, Palryeon Castle, and the tomb in Mt.
Yukjeongstarted to publish, it was possible to conduct comprehensive research on the roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdom. This study reviewed research outcomes regarding roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdomconducted in South and North Koreas, China, Russia, and Japan by period, and suggested some opinions for prospective full-scale studies.
Studies of roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdom can be classified into 4 periods. In Period 1 (1930s~1940s), Japanese scholars led the studies focusing on the patterns and shapes of roof tiles, of which results provided academic research foundation for further studies. In Period 2 (1950s~1970s), excavations in Northeast regions were extensively made by Korea-China Joint excavation teams. In this period, impressed pattern or characters on plain roof tiles began to be focused. In Period 3 (1980s-1990s), there was rapid increase in number of research, and North Korea- China joint research and South Korea-Russia joint research produced visible achievements. In particular, through the analysis of roof-end tiles, it was found that roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdomreceived influence from GoguryeoKingdom and United Shilla Kingdom. In Period 4 (2000s-present), as China’s Northeast Project was promoted in full scale, studies were proceeded in many countries. Research subject areas were also expanded reaching to Maritime Province, and segmented studies were made, such as studies focusing on calligraphy style on the sentences written on roof titles, reviews on the male roof-end titles by patterns. Major issues raised based on the trend of previous studies include: kinds and terms of roof tiles of the Balhae Kingdom; providing clear criteria for classification; concepts of female roof tiles and female roof-end titles;transition process of Wadang, a roof-end tile without frame; and symbolism and ritual properties of roof tiles. Although these issues cannot be treated in a short period of time, steady studies on their issues would be of great help in restoring the life Balhae Kingdom’s people.
