明末 동성애소설 《宜春香質》⋅《弁而釵》 삽화의 서사 재현과 玩物로서의 특징 연구 (A Study on the Pictorial Representation of Narrative and the Aesthetic Graphics in the Illustrations of Late Ming Homosexual Novel Yichunxiangzhi(宜春香質) and Bianerchai(弁而釵))

명말 숭정 연간에 출판된 《宜春香質》과 《弁而釵》는 당시 널리 유행하던 남색 풍조를 반영한 이른바 ‘남색소설’이다. 남자들 사이의 과도한 성애 묘사로 여러 차례 금서가 되었던 이 두 소설집은 그러나 매우 공들여 편집, 출간된 기획출판물이었다. 筆耕山房에서 출간된 이 두 소설집의 삽화는 整版式으로 앞면에는 이야기 그림을 넣고 뒷면에는 기물 도안 혹은 화조 도안을 넣어 앞뒤가 한 쌍을 이루는 결합식의 삽화 형태를 이루고 있다. 비슷한 시기 같은 화가와 각공에 의해 그려진 것으로 보이는 이 삽화들은 사실상 명말청초 유행했던 중단편 백화소설집의 고사-기물 결합식 삽화 양식과 같은 계보 속에 있다. 명대의 남색 풍조는 현대의 동성애와는 결이 다른, 일종의 문화 소비 양상으로 해석될 수 있으며, 《宜春香質》과 《弁而釵》는 주제만으로는 인과응보와 情을 이야기하고 있지만 이와 동시에 ‘남성 동성애’라는 당시 유행하던 하나의 취향에 대한 포르노그래피적인 性의 매뉴얼이자, ‘남색’의 소비문화에 대한 일종의 소개서로 읽힐 수도 있다. 그리고 책 속의 고사-기물 삽화는 博古와 書畫라는 명말 출판시장의 기본 ‘교양’과 ‘취미’를 시각적으로 축약해서 제시한다. 이에 본 논문은 《宜春香質》과 《弁而釵》의 삽화 속 서사 재현과 기물 도안 및 장식 테두리 등 삽화의 장식 문양을 통해 서적이 어떻게 하나의 ‘玩物’이 되고 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다.

영어초록

The “Yi Chun Xiang Zhi(宜春香質)” and “Bian Er Chai(弁而釵)” are the so-called “Homosexuality novel” reflecting the trend of the time. These two novels, which had been forbidden many times by the depiction of excessive sexuality among men, however, were very carefully edited and published project publications. We can clearly see this point from the elaborate illustrations that include the name of each of the chapters such as “Wind”, “Flower”, “Snow”, and “Moon” have. The illustrations of these two novels published by the same publisher are in the form of an allegorical style, with a narrative painting on the front, and antique object patterns on the back, forming a pair of front and back illustrations. These illustrations, which seem to have been drawn by the same artists and painters of the same period, are in the same lineage as the narrative-object combination style form of a short story book’s illustration which is virtually in vogue. The traditional Chinese novels, which originated from the paintings of Bian xiang(变相), and started to change from the illustration of the upper side to the illustration in the whole page, then change to a ‘conjoint artwork illustration’ that is cleverly edited to make the front and back of the book pages into a pair of meaning. And this shows that book illustrations play a role in upgrading the book itself as a material product beyond simple decoration in the book. In fact, it is also an imitation of the style of literati paintings. On the back of the “Yi Chun Xiang Zhi(宜春香質)” conjoined artwork, there is a poetry associated with the story on the front side of the drawing. On the back of the artwork, the antique pattern inside also has a meaning related to the central design. Here again we need to look at the nature of the “Yi Chun Xiang Zhi(宜春香質)” and “Bian Er Chai(弁而釵)” of the “Homosexuality novel”. The “Homosexuality novel” of late Ming can be interpreted as a form of cultural consumption, which is different from modern homosexuality. The “Yi Chun Xiang Zhi(宜春香質)” and “Bian Er Chai(弁而釵)” all speak of retributive justice and empathy stories, but at the same time they can be read as an introduction to the “taste of homosexuality” or the consumption culture of the time. In these books, the narrative-object illustrations show the cultural hobby and taste of the time. In this study, I tried to see how books were becoming an object of aesthetic experience through the illustrations of “Yi Chun Xiang Zhi(宜春香質)” and “Bian Er Chai(弁而釵)”.
