세종지역 癸酉銘 佛碑像의조성 집단과 제작 배경 (Background of the Production and Sponsers of Gyeyumyeong Buddhist Stele in Sejong Area)

초록

국내 불비상 연구는 불비상 발견지가 멸망 전 백제의 영역이고, 불비상에 나타나는 도상이 백제의 양식이라는 이유에서 불비상 조성의 주체를 백제 유민으로 파악하여 진행되었다. 그러나 이 일대는 신라와 백제가 예부터 공취와 탈환을 반복하던 전장이자 접경지였다. 또한 불비상의 명문에는 신라 관등자, 백제 관등자, 관등이 없거나 알 수 없는 자, 승려로 파악되는 자 등 다양하게 나타난다. 명문에 기록되지 않은 일반민들도 향도와 지식이라는 집단 속에 존재한다. 이는 명문에 나타난 인물들이 하나의 성격으로만 규정될 수 없음을 보여준다.
이 글은 불비상이 신라 정부의 후원을 받은 신라 관등자들에 의해 조성되었을 가능성을 찾아보고자 하였다. 먼저 「계유명삼존천불비상」과 「계유명아미타불비상」의 명문을 검토하여, 弥次는 乃末이라는 관등을 지닌 인물임을 확인하였다.
또한, 백제 대성팔족인 眞氏의 이칭으로 해석되었던 牟氏는 백제 목간을 통해 확인한 결과, 이름일 가능성이 있으며, 따라서 眞武大舍와 牟氏大舍는 서로 다른 인물로 볼 수 있다고 파악하였다.
대다수 인물이 신라 관등을 지닌 점은 불비상 조성지가 신라 영토 내에 있었음을 암시한다. 백제 멸망 후 취리산회맹의 결과로 불비상 조성지인 仇知縣은 신라의 영역에 편입되었을 것으로 판단된다. 이후 신라는 백제 유민의 이탈을 방지하고 안정화를 위해 불사 활동을 했을 가능성이 높다. 또한 계유년에 제작된 두 불비상에서 이름과 관등이 일치하는 인물인 弥次 乃末은 신라 중앙에서 파견된 지방관으로서 이러한 활동의 중심에 있었던 인물로 여겨진다. 여기에 백제 유민인 身次가 호응한 것은 신라의 정책에 동의한 모습이며, 신라가 백제 유민들을 원활하게 포섭하였음을 나타낸다고 생각한다.

영어초록

Previous studies on the Korean Buddhist steles believe that the creators of the steles are refugees from Baekje because the discovery sites are in the former ​​territory of Baekje before its collapse and the steles display the style of Baekje art. However, this area was a border area as well as a battlefield of Silla and Baekje and they constantly had fights to win the area from ancient times. In the inscriptions of the steles, people are represented in various forms: some with an official rank of Silla, some with an official rank of Baekje, others without an official rank, some whose official ranks are unrecognizable, and monks etc. In addition, ordinary people who are not recorded on the inscriptions belong to the groups called Hyangdo and Jisik. The people on the inscriptions should not be defined to be in only one group.
This paper discusses the possibility that the Silla people, with the support of the Silla government, were the main creators of the steles. Through an examination of the inscriptions on Gyeyu Buddha Triad and a Thousand Buddhas Stele(癸酉銘三尊千佛碑像) and Gyeyu Amitabha Stele(癸酉銘阿彌陀佛碑像) confirms that 'Micha' is a name of a person with an official rank of Naemal (乃末). Additionally, the Mo clan(牟氏), which was interpreted as an alternative name for the Jin clan(眞氏) among the Great Eight Families of Baekje, is likely a given name, as confirmed through the Baekje wooden tablets. Therefore, it has been concluded that Jinmu Daesa(眞武大舍) and Moo-shi Daesa(牟氏大舍) can be regarded as distinct individuals.
The prevalence of individuals with Silla titles implies that these stele were created within Silla territory. After Baekje’s fall, it is likely that the area known as Gujihyeon (仇知縣), where the stele were located, was incorporated into Silla's domain following the Mt. Chuiri League (就利山會盟). To stabilize the region and prevent Baekje people from defecting, Silla likely engaged in religious activities, such as supporting these Buddhist monuments. Furthermore, “Micha Naemal(弥次乃末),” an individual mentioned in both stele inscriptions, likely served as a central figure, dispatched from the Silla capital to oversee such activities.
In conclusion, this study presents the possibility that the stelae were produced under Silla leadership rather than exclusively by Baekje refugees. The participation of a Baekje refugees, Dalsol Shincha(達率身次), suggests an alignment with Silla’s policies, demonstrating Silla's effective integration of Baekje refugees.
