초록

The recategorization of adjectives as nouns is observed from high-frequency vocabulary in Spanish. However, it is not reflected in the teaching and learning field in Korea. Previous studies in the Spanish language are limited to descriptions of meanings, forms and syntactic features. Therefore, this paper tries to explain why and how this phenomenon was generalized from various perspectives. Originally this recategorization was derived from Latin and became more productive due to the article system in Spanish language. The most notable phenomenon is that the derived adjectives created by suffixation are recategorized into nouns afterward. Representative suffixes employed in this process are -al, -án,-ario, -ble, -ego, -eno, -ense, -eño, -eo, -és, -ico, -ino, -nte, etc. and their principal meanings are ability, affiliation, agent, attitude, flora and fauna, local name, occupation, origin, place, quality, relation, tool, etc. In addition, those forms derived from the verbal past participles and those derived from academic names are also very prominent. Moreover, the recategorization of adjectives as nouns has been dynamically expanded in accordance with the expansion of activities involving material exchanges among people and the increase of new technologies, products, occupations, etc. in the modern global era.
