초록

The text which provided the most basic philosophy in formulating the names for the Gyeongbok-gung structures was the 『書經(The Book of History)』text, and the 「洪範(The Great Plan)」 chapter and 「無逸(Seeking No Ease and Comfort)」 chapter. The names of the Jeon-gak were listed in the order of 'from the inside to the outside', like “Gangnyeong-jeon(bedroom chamber) → Sajeong-jeon(the office) → Geunjeong-jeon(the main hall) → Jeongmun(main gate)”. This order represented the intention of visualizing “King's own efforts of 正心誠意(Correcting one's attitude and make one's will Sincere) → 格物致知(Studying the phenomina of nature to ocguire knowledge) and the King's ruling(ways to achieve and obtain the principles of the universe[天下之理]) → details of King's ruling(ways to rule the things in the universe[天下之事]) → Abstract”. This order also represented the 『大學(The Great Learning』's “八條目(eight articles)”. The names of the Jeon-gak in the Gyeongbok-gung palace formulated by Jeong Do Jeon consistently showed the Neo-Confucian philosophy of managing the order of the world, while the names of the Jeon-gak of the Goryeo dynasty's main palace did not show such degree. We can see that the wills and hopes of the Confucian scholars who hoped for social reforms and the character- building exercise of the King based upon Neo-Confucian philosophy during the late Goyreo and early Joseon days, are embedded in the names of the Gyeongbok-gung palace, and so is Jeong Do Jeon's own intentions regarding the reinforced functions of prime ministers in nation ruling.
