초록

In the 2nd year of King Cheoljong's reign(1851), there occurred the Hwanghae-do Rebellion, which was attempted around the Hwanghae-do region by Confucian scholars including Chae Hee-jae in the midst of all sorts of resistance in the middle 19th century and failed by a report of treason. They tried to crown Lee Myeong-seop, a descendent of Sohyeon Seja. The central figures including Chae Hee-jae made efforts to correct the Samjeong with legitimate measures such as Sangeon being interested in the system's corruption. Once their efforts all failed, they resorted to an illegitimate measure of uprising.
King Cheoljong acceded to the throne even if he was a descendent of Euneongun who was also a criminal, which gave a cause for crowning Lee Myeong-seop, a descendent of Sohyeon Seja, to the parties who attempted an uprising. The different parties that each attempted an uprising got to know the existence of each other through Lee Myeong-seop and formulated their common event specifically. Lee Myeong-seop also responded to those movements positively.
The Hwanghae-do Rebellion, which was an uprising to crown a member of the legitimate royal family, had a couple of characteristics that distinguished it from other uprisings. It first did not contain all sorts of folk religious elements, which were often found in uprisings since the 17th century, such as putting a symbolic figure like Choi Yeong in the front, foretelling the emergence of a true man, and using a writing of divination such as Jeonggamrok. Replacing all those elements in the event was the symbolicity of Lee Myeong-seop as a descendent of Sohyeon Seja.
Furthermore, it did not have wandering parties that accompanied uprisings since the 17th century. Joining forces with those folk religious elements mentioned above, wandering parties took a lead in uprisings. However, the Hwanghae-do Rebellion was operated by the indigenous force of the Hwanghae-do region. Their interest in Samjeong also reflected their indigenous nature, which ultimately led to their attempt to crown Lee Myeong-seop, a descendent of the royal family. Taking a form of uprising, the Hwanghae-do Rebellion contained the elements of a popular uprising in terms of content. In the 13th year of King Cheoljong's reign(1862) not long after the rebellion, there occurred Imsul Popular uprising nationwide.
