한국어 무조사 명사구의 통사와 의미 (Syntax and Semantics of Bare NPs in Korean)

초록

한국어에서 조사를 가지지 않는 무조사 명사구(즉 무조사구)는 제시어와 엄격히 구별되지 않는 것으로, 여기서는 그것을 제시 주제의 성격을 가지는 것으로 보았다. 제시어가 주제의 기능을 한다는 것이 간혹 언급되기도 하였으나, 본고는 ‘격 어휘론자 가설’과 ‘담화 화용적 주제 원리’에 입각하여 무조사구 주제 가설을 제기하였다. 무조사구는 어휘부에 주어진 논항 정보에 의해서는 분석되지 않는 잉여 성분의 성격을 띤다. 그에 합당한 기능이 주어지지 않으면, 그것은 통사 분석에서 제외된다. 담화 화용적 주제 원리를 적용하여 그것을 통사적 주제로 설정하면 이러한 난관에서 벗어날 수 있게 된다. 이는 잉여 성분에 대한 통사 분석을 가능하게 한다. 무조사구에 활성 상태에 의한 해석을 도입하는 것이 가능하다는 것을 확인하였으며, 그 작용역이 큰 영역에 걸칠 수 있다는 사실도 확인하였다. 이는 무조사구가 다른 유표적 주제와 평행적 기능을 가지는 것임을 의미한다.
제시어에는 ‘강한 제시어’가 있고 ‘약한 제시어’가 있다. 강한 제시어는 하강 억양과 뒤에 깊은 휴지를 가지는 반면, 약한 제시어는 이러한 특징을 가지지 않는다. 무조사구는 정도상의 차이를 가지고, 강한 제시어와 약한 제시어 사이에 걸치게 되는데, 속담과 같은 관용 표현에서는 그 성격이 추상화되어 구체성을 상실하기도 한다. 재구조화에 의하여 논항과 같이 인식되기도 한다.

영어초록

In this paper, it is claimed that the Bare NP in Korean can be characterized as a sort of presentational topic or ‘theme’ in the sense of Dik (1976), which nevertheless needs to be modified to comprise the constituent theme occurring sentence medially. In Korean linguistics, the bare NP has widely been recognized as a phenomenon like case marker drop, case marker unrealization, or even case ellipsis.
However it is undeniable that there can be found meaning differences between the case marked NP and the bare NP. The famous ‘Indefinite Case Hypothesis’ has been put forth with respect to the Bare NP. This hypothesis sees that the bare NP does not represent case marker drop, but represents a specific case. But theoretically it runs into a serious problem to set up a case not included in the case system. Generative approach to the so-called case marker ellipsis in Korean also shows great deficiency not to recognize the basic fact of the Korean data. The generative grammarians usually claim that only the accusative case marker can be dropped, which is untenable, simply because that is not the case in real. The simple truth is that the seemingly subject can be used without any case marker.
Most of all, this paper takes the position that syntactic analysis should be done on the basis of the lexical information given in the lexicon, which could be called Lexicalist Case Hypothesis (LCH). On this basis, when applied Variable Medial Projection Hypothesis that posits the number of projections as many as the number of argument(s) of predicate, we cannot but analyze the bare NP as a syntactic remnant, because the bare NP strictly does not correspond to the proper argument given in the lexicon. According to Ubiquitous Topic Hypothesis that says any major constituents can be topic in a sentence, the syntactic remnant can be assigned topic function to.
Some empirical evidences can be presented for the topichood of the bare NP. It shows infelicities to be used (a) in the discourse initial sentence, (b) in the on-the-spot description of the event. (c) it shows wide scope reading in conjoined structure, (d) The resumptive expressions can be reoccupied in the putative original regular argument position. (e) Its function in part is on a par with the eun/neun topic, etc. in Korean. Weak presentational topic in contrast with strong one is proposed to cope with the fixed expressive effect involved in the bare NP. This is due to the restructuring of the bare NP topic into pseudo-argument.
