삼명과 번뇌의 관점에서 보는 무명 (A Study on Avijjā from the Perspective of Tevijja and Āsava)

초록

필자의 문제의식은 간단하다. 십이연기의 무명을 사성제에 대한 무지라고 한다면, 사성제를 알면서도 무명을 끊지 못하는 경우를 어떻게 설명할 것인가이다. 이를 위해서 붓다가 깨달음을 이루게 되는 삼명을 통해서 무명을 검토하고자 한다. 우선 무명의 대상과 관련해서 무명은 사성제에 대한 무명, 윤회에 대한 무명으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 전자는 논리적 해석, 후자는 전통적 해석으로 불린다. 윤회에 대한 무명은 붓다의 깨달음을 기술하는 과정에서 주로 삼명과 함께 사용된다. 삼명 가운데 숙명지와 사생지는 나와 모든 중생의 윤회 과정과 현실을 명확히 아는 것이고, 누진지는 윤회 과정에서의 번뇌 즉 루를 다한 것을 아는 것이다.
포괄적 관점에서 무명은 시간적으로는 모든 과거생의 무명, 공간적으로는 모든 중생의 무명을 말한다. 이는 삼명의 반대인 삼무명(三無明) 전체를 말한다고 할 수 있다. 본래적 관점에서 무명은 번뇌라고 정의할 수 있고, 욕루, 유루, 무명루의 세 가지 번뇌 가운데 무명루(無明漏)에 해당한다고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 되면 무명을 ‘알려지지 않은 미세한 번뇌’로 정의할 수 있을 것이다. 이는 삼명 가운데 핵심이 누진지이고, 누진지 가운데 핵심이 루에 있고, 루 가운데 핵심이 무명루라는 것에 기인한다. 알 수 없는 수많은 미세한 번뇌 가운데 하나 또는 다수가 십이연기의 첫 번째 각지인 무명이 된다. 십이연기의 무명, 행, 식까지의 연기과정은 ‘알지 못하는 미세한 번뇌로 인해서 신구의 세차원에서 조작된 기억’으로 해석할 수 있다. 그리고 삼명을 수행의 방법론의 차원에서 윤회를 밝히고, 중생과 나의 삶의 본질을 알고, 번뇌로부터 맑아지는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이는 숙명지, 사생지, 누진지와 연관된 방법론이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

My problem is simple. if the avijjā of the Twelve Nidanas is called ignorance of the Four Noble Truths, how do you explain the case of knowing the Four Noble Truths and not being able to eliminate the avijjā ? When the Four Noble Truths are interpreted doctrinally, it is not clear what kind of suffering it is and what kind of object of ignorance it is. I would like to examine the avijjā through the tevijja that the Buddha achieves enlightenment.
Regarding the object of the avijjā, the avijjā can be divided into the avijjā for the Four Noble Truths and the avijjā for the reincarnation. The former is called logical interpretation, the latter is called traditional interpretation. The avijjā for reincarnation is mainly used with tevijja in the process of describing the Buddha's enlightenment. Of the tevijja, knowledge of the past lives and knowledge of the death and future lives clearly know the process and reality of the reincarnation of me and all sentient beings, and knowledge of the exhaustion of āsava knows that they have exhausted their defilements or āsava in the process of reincarnation. From the point of view of the Four Noble Truths, knowledge of the exhaustion of āsava is the process of the elimination and its path of Reincarnation, and knowledge of the past lives and knowledge of the death and future lives shows the suffering and its origin of reincarnation. Three Knowledge can be explained from the perspective of the Four Noble Truths. As such, the first place in the Twelve Nidanas, avijjā, should consider the viewpoints of the three knowledge, and the Four Noble Truths should be considered in connection with the three knowledge. If we can understand the Four Noble Truths from the viewpoint of three knowledge, the avijjā for the Four Noble Truths and the avijjā for the reincarnation will become commensurable.
If the above interpretation is an understanding of avijjā from a comprehensive point of view, it can be defined from the essential point of view that avijjā is defilements. It can be said that it belongs to defilements of avijjā among the three defilements. Avijjā could be defined as defilements of avijjā, ‘unknown and subtle defilements’. This is due to the fact that the essence of the tevijja is knowledge of the exhaustion of āsava, the essence of knowledge of the exhaustion of āsava is defilements, and the essence of the defilements is defilements of avijjā.
