명(明)과 조선의 관계에서 본 한글의 창제 - 왜 훈민정음 <언해본>은 『월인석보』에 첨부되었는가? - (A Study of the Creation of Hangeul in Terms of the Relationship between Joseon and Ming Dynasty - Why was the Korean-translated version of Hunminjeongeum attached to Wolin-seokbo? -)

초록

독자적 문자를 마련하지 못한 민족은 문자를 빌려와 사용한다. 로마자나 러시아의 끼릴 문자를 빌려와 사용한 베트남과 몽고는 문자사용에 있어 어려움을 치루게 된다. 또 일본의 가나문자와 같이 한 글자가 여러 발음으로 읽어야 하는 어려움이 뒤따른다. 그런 의미에서 세종대왕이 한글을 창제하신 것은 우리 기록문화의 유지와 창달에 중요한 문화사적 발명이다. 그런데 많은 연구자들이 한글은 세종이 유례가 없는 문자를 독창적으로 만드신 것이라고 주장한다. 그러나 한 나라의 왕이 음성학 이론으로 뒷받침되는 표음문자를 독자적으로 만드셨다는 주장을 믿기 어렵다. 또 새 문자를 왜 『월인석보』와 같은 불경에 기대여 공표하였는지 알 수 없다. 조선 초기에 명은 조선이 한자 문화에 저항하여 새 문자를 제정하는 북방민족의 전통을 추종할 것을 두려워하였다. 따라서 세종은 명의 감시를 피하여 산스크리트 문자로 쓰인 불경에 의지하여 새 문자를 공포하지 않을 수 없었다. 다만 새 문자의 해설서인 훈민정음의 <언해본>이 세종 사후인 세조 5년에 간행한 『월인석보』에 첨부되었기 때문에 한문으로 된 훈민정음 <해례본>의 간행을 새 문자의 공표로 보아 정통11년 9월 상한(上澣)을 양력으로 환산하여 10월 9일을 한글날로 기념하고 있다. 따라서, “정통12년”의 간기가 있는 『월인석보』의 옥책이 진품이라면 훈민정음 <언해본>이 세종 생존 시에 발표된 것으로 보아 한글반포에 대한 새로운 연구가 가능할 것이다.

영어초록

Many questions on the creation of Hangeul remain unanswered. A number of scholars who study Hangeul have attempted to explain the origin or creation of Hangeul from a nationalistic viewpoint, claiming that Hangeul, is an original creation of King Sejong. However, it is hard to believe the mythical, unrealistic claim that a king of a country himself created a phonetic alphabet based on linguistic principles supported by profound linguistic theories of phonetics. In addition, it is not clearly known or understood why the new script was promulgated through Wolin-seokbo, an annotated Buddhist scripture. In particular, in the early days of Joseon, when King Sejong invented Hangeul, the Phags-pa script was created and used by the Yuan Dynasty according to the tradition of the northern peoples in East Asia who created and used their own script because of the resistance of the Yuan Dynasty against Chinese character culture. Zhū Yuánzhāng who destroyed the Yuan Dynasty of the Mongols, not only destroyed the Phags-pa script thoroughly but also feared that Joseon would create such a writing system following the Yuan Dynasty. Therefore, in order to avoid the surveillance of the Ming dynasty, King Sejong was forced to promulgate a new writing system by attaching it to a Buddhist scripture written in Sanskrit. However, because the Korean- translated version of Hunmin-jeongeum, a commentary on the new writing system, was attached to Wolin-seokbo, which was published in the fifth year of King Sejo after King Sejong died, the publication of the Haerye Edition of Hunmin-jeongeum written in Chinese characters is regarded as the promulgation of the new letter system. As a result, since the Haerye Edition of Hunmin-jeongeum was promulgated on the early in September of the eleventh year of Zhĕng tŏng, by converting the date of the lunar calendar into the date of the Gregorian calendar, October 9 was declared as Hangeul Day to commemorate the promulgation of Hunmin-jeongeum, and the creation of Hangeul is celebrated on October 9 in Korea every year. If the Jade Book of Wolin-seokbo with the imprint of the twelfth year of Jeongtong, is verified as an authentic historical artifact, it can be considered to indicate that the Eoenhaebon of Hunmin-jeongeum was published during the reign of King Sejong, so there is a need to re-examine the promulgation of Hangeul.
