고려전기 묘지명 연구-知制誥 찬 묘지명을 중심으로- (A Study of the Memorial Inscription(墓誌銘) in The First Term Koryo Dynaty)

초록

본고는 高麗前期 知制誥 찬 묘지명을 대상으로 찬자별로 서술방식과 특성을 분석하고 그 시대적 추이를 살핌으로써 고려전기 지제고 찬 묘지명의 문학사적 의의를 구명하였다.
고려전기 묘지명은 무신집권기나 고려후기처럼 소수 인물이 찬술을 분점하는 양상은 보이지 않는다. 대신 특징적인 것은 지제고 찬 묘지명이 40% 가까이 된다는 점이다. 이것은 王命으로 佛家의 碑銘을 지었던 전통과 관련이 있으며, 한편으로는 분화된 전문작가가 아직 충분히 형성되지 않은 고려전기 문단의 시대적 상황을 반영한 것으로 해석된다.
지제고 찬 묘지명을 통해 찬자별 특성과 함께 시대적 추이를 살펴볼 수 있다. 먼저 예종대 韓冲은 崔思諏․崔繼芳이라는 당대 최대 문벌가문 인물을 주인공으로 하여 격례를 잘 갖춘, 그러면서도 대상에 알맞춘 구성법을 활용하고 작자 의식을 투입함으로써 문벌사회에 대응하는 글쓰기 방식을 보여 주었다. 인종대에는 金精이 福寧宮主를 유교의 모범적 여성상으로 닦아 세우고, 또 許載에 대하여 적극적으로 스토리를 만들어 이미지를 덧댐으로써 강직하고 품위 있는 관료상을 구성하였다. 의종대 초반 金子儀는 權適․尹彦頥를 위한 묘지명에서 경전 등 典故를 활용하거나 비유교적 행적을 의도적으로 배제하면서 전략적으로 유교적 군자의 전형을 수립하였다. 의종대 중․후반에 金于蕃은 閔瑛과 같은 이채로운 인물형을 받아들이고 崔允儀를 社稷의 元臣으로 특성화함으로써 묘지명의 대상 확장 및 개성화 양상을 확인케 해 준다.
한편, 문체의 방면에서는 간결하고 조리 있고 세련된 古文의 실제를 확인할 수 있다. 이런 데는 예․인종～의종대까지 이어지는 유교 정치이념, 고문에 대한 인식, 蘇軾 묘지명의 학습, 그리고 찬자들의 강한 유학적 성향이 중요한 요인으로 작용한 것으로 보인다.
이들 묘지명에는, 시기별 차이는 있으나, 국가적 정책 방향, 유교이념, 공공윤리 등이 여느 묘지명에 비해 높은 수준으로 반영되어 있다. 이것은 묘주들의 공공지수가 대체로 높고 찬자들이 지제고라는 사실과 관련될 것이다. 그로 인해 묘지명에 그려진 인물의 생동감이 다소간 결여되고 이상화된 방향으로 기울어 있는 것은 어쩔 수 없는 한계이다. 그러나 비지류 전통에서 묘지명이 양식적으로 안정되고 유가의 문학으로 자리 잡는 데는 이들의 기여가 적지 않았다.
한편, 찬자들은 묘지명이라는 양식적 제약과 지제고라는 위치가 의식되는 상황에서도 자신의 문학적 역량을 발휘하면서 자신(또는 찬자가 속한 집단)의 상황인식, 주제의식, 희망, 의지, 지향 따위를 투사하여 일정 수준 이상의 작품을 만들어냈다. 고려전기 지제고 찬 묘지명이 문예적인 개인적 산문으로서 인정받을 수 있는 이유가 여기에 있다.
고려전기 묘지명의 전개는 비명의 전통에 힘입는 동시에 그것을 밀쳐내면서, 또 외부적 요인을 의식하고 그것을 소화하면서 자기의 양식과 수준을 마련하는 과정이었다. 지제고 찬 묘지명은 그 역할을 선두에서 수행하였다. 고려전기 묘지명은 그 스스로 의미 있는 역사이며, 동시에 후대 묘지명의 前史로서도 의의를 갖는다. 무신집권기와 고려후기의 묘지명은 고려전기의 시도와 성과가 계승 그리고 극복․지양되는 과정이 있고서야 나올 수 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the historical significance of the memorial inscription in the first term of Koryo by analyzing descriptive methods, features, and the periodical transition of epitaphs.
The memorial inscription in the first term of Koryo does not demonstrate the people themselves, as the next generation of inscription does. Surprisingly enough, Ji-Jae-Go(知制誥)'s epitaphs nearly occupy forty percent of all inscriptions. The truth is that these distinctive circumstances are closely related with the inscription on a monument of Buddhist priests. On the other hand, it also seemed that the first term of Koryo was not ready to produce professional letters in literary circles while it reflected the periodical aspects.
Ji-Jae-Go's epitaphs are evenly spread around the period of the first term of Koryo. Through these memorial inscriptions, we can witness the features and the state of society in that time.
In the time of Yejong(睿宗), Han Chung(韓冲) demonstrated peculiar writing styles based on those protagonists of renowned lineages such as Choi Sa Choo(崔思諏) and Choi Gye Bang(崔繼芳). He also invigorated writers' consciousness making the most of appropriate syntax, which was equivalent to the well-noted as in upper class which was familiar to the noble, upper class in society. In the time of Injong(仁宗), Kim Jung(金精) exalted the royal mistress, Bok Nyong(福寧), as the shining example of womanhood and showed Heo Jae(許載) as a influential and decent bureaucratic shape.
In the early time of Uijong(毅宗), Kim Ja Ui(金子儀) strategically utilized the classical canon on epitaphs for Kwon Jeok(權適) and Yun Eon yi(尹彦頥). He also intentionally defended Confucius' achievements and established stereotypical examples of a noble man. In the middle and later years of Uijong(毅宗), Kim Woo Beon(金于蕃) welcomed a distinctive figure like Min Young(閔瑛) and characterized Choi Yun Ui(崔允儀) as a leading statesman and a trustworthy servant, which confirms the extension of epitaphs and his marked individuality.
On the other hand, when it comes to writing style, They preferred concise and sophisticated Gomoon(古文). It seems that their Confucian ideology, recognition of Gomoon, learning of So Sik(蘇軾)'s epitaph and trend of Confucianism played remarkable roles in the shape of their personality.
On these inscriptions, although there exist periodical differences, national position papers, Confucian ideology, and public morality are distinctively reflected. It can be seen that he was closely involved in political situations at that time. There is no denying that the portrayal of a man of worth on epitaph lacks vitality and figures are also somewhat idealized. It is a deniable limitation for him. Despite that, he contributed to boost Confucian literature and settle it down in a stable manner.
Meanwhile, regardless of the restriction and limitation of epitaph locations, they demonstrated their literary achievements and traced situational recognition, subjective consciousness, hope, willingness, and future-oriented inclination. That's why epitaphs of the first term of Koryo have been recognized as a distinctive style of prose in literature.
The development of the epitaph in the first term of Koryo not only intentionally resorts to the power of the traditional inscriptions but simultaneously excludes it, welcoming it as its own and preparing for a different standard. Ji-Jae-Go's inscription was the forerunner in terms of this. Epitaphs in the first term of Koryo are meaningful history themselves. The period of power in arms and memorial inscriptions of the second term of Koryo could have entered the stage by overcoming its boundary and taking over it.
