조선에서 명나라로 펼쳐진 접선摺扇 ― 동아시아 부채 문화에서 조선 접선의 의미와 명明 내 유통 (The Spread of Folding Fans(摺扇) from Joseon to Ming China ― The Significance of Joseon Folding Fans in East Asian Fan Culture and Their Circulation in the Ming Dynasty)

초록

본 연구는 명·청대 사료를 폭넓게 검토하여 접선에 관한 기존 연구의 오류를 점검하고, 조선 접선이 동아시아 부채 문화에 미친 영향과 그 의미를 드러내고자 한다. 접선은 8세기 이후 고려와 일본에서 제작되기 시작하여 송대 중국에유입되었으며, 명대에 이르러 보편화되었다. 명·청대 사료들은 접선의 대중화가 영락제永樂帝의 조선 접선 수용에서 비롯되었다고 기록하고 있으며, 이에 따라 접선 보급에 조선이 중요한 역할을 했음을 시사한다.
이와 관련한 기존 연구는 대부분 일본 미술사학계에서 이루어졌고, 일부 사료에 의존하여 일본 접선이 명대 접선의 보편화에 기여했다는 주장을 반복해 왔다. 그러나 문진형의 『장물지』는 『화계』의 고려 부채 설명을 베낀 것으로, 사료적 오류가 명백하다. 또한 『양산묵담』의 접선 관련 기록 역시 일본 접선의 양상과는 맞지 않으며, 오히려 실용적인 조선 접선의 특징과 부합한다.
명·청대 문집, 백과사전 등 다수 사료는 조선 접선이 명대 접선 보편화에 계기가 되었다고 설명한다. 또한 중국 사료 내용처럼 영락제 시기 조선 접선이 명 관료들 사이에 인기가 있었다는 것도 조선 기록을 통해 확인된다.
조선 접선은 명 관료에 대한 예물과 사무역품으로 지속적으로 활용됨으로써 명나라에 광범위하게 유통되었다.
본 연구는 동아시아 문화 교류 속에 가려져 있던 조선 접선을 발견하고 그 위상을 살펴보았다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 향후 동아시아 문화 교류 연구에서 접선을 포함한 다양한 물품의 유통과 상호 영향을 탐색하는 연구가 지속되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This study aims to identify errors in previous research by extensively examining historical records from the Ming and Qing dynasties regarding folding fans. It also seeks to elucidate the influence and significance of Joseon folding fans in East Asian fan culture.
Folding fans began to be produced in Goryeo and Japan from the 8th century onward and were introduced to China during the Song dynasty, becoming widely popularized by the Ming dynasty. Historical records from the Ming and Qing dynasties indicate that the popularization of folding fans stemmed from Emperor Yongle’s (永樂帝) adoption of Joseon folding fans, suggesting that Joseon played a crucial role in their dissemination.
However, previous research has argued that Japanese folding fans influenced the spread of folding fans in the Ming dynasty. In particular, Japanese art historians have repeatedly asserted, based on a very limited number of sources, that Japanese folding fans contributed tothe expansion of fan culture in the Ming dynasty. Yet, Mun Jin-hyeong’s Jangmulji (『⻑物志』) merely plagiarized Hwagye (『畫繼』)’s description of Goryeo fans, revealing clear historical inaccuracies. Additionally, the records on folding fans in Yangsanmukdam (『兩山墨談』) do not align with the characteristics of Japanese folding fans but instead correspond to the practical features of Joseon folding fans. Numerous historical texts, including anthologies and encyclopedias from the Ming and Qing dynasties, describe how Joseon folding fans served as a catalyst for the widespread use of folding fans in the Ming dynasty. Furthermore, historical records confirm that Joseon folding fans were highly popular among Ming officials during Emperor Yongle’s reign. These fans continued to be used as diplomatic gifts and trade goods, leading to their extensive distribution throughout Ming China.
This study holds significance in that it supplements the limitations of previous research on Joseon folding fans through a thorough review and comparative analysis of various historical sources. Additionally, it examines the status of Joseon folding fans within the broader context of East Asian cultural exchange. It is hoped that future studies on East Asian cultural interactions will continue to explore the distribution and mutual influences of various objects, including folding fans.
