광개토왕릉비 제1~2면의 비면 현황과 비문 판독 (Face Status and Letter Reading of the first and second sides of Gwanggaeto Royal Tomb Monument)

초록

광개토왕릉비는 고구려사 연구에서 가장 중요한 금석문이지만, 비면이 많이 마멸되어 여전히 판독을 둘러싸고 논란이 분분하다. 종전에는 연구자들이 주로 개별 글자 단위로 판독을 진행하였다. 이에 따라 연구자마다 글자 형태의 판별 기준, 그리고 글자 획과 균열선의 구분 기준이 달라서 판독에 대해 다양한 견해가 제기되었다.
필자는 개별 글자 단위가 아니라 균열과 박락 부분을 단위로 삼아 균열선의 진행 방향과 마멸의 정도를 고려하며 판독을 진행하였다. 다만 분량이 너무 많아 이 논문에서는 제1면과 제2면만 판독하고, 제3면과 제4면은 다른 논문에서 다루었다.
제1면에서는 판독 논란자 43자를 검토하였다. 이 가운데 마멸이 극심한 11자를 제외하고, 32자를 판독하였다. 3글자는 글자 획이 남아 있지 않아 전후 문맥을 통해 추독했다. 2자는 일부 글자 획만 제시했다. 27자는 전체 자형을 제시했는데, 1-10-31자(國)는 새로운 판독안을 제시했다.
제2면은 판독 논란자 54자를 검토하였다. 이 가운데 마멸이 극심한 6자를 제외하고, 48자를 판독하였다. 3자는 글자 획이 남아 있지 않아 문맥을 통해 추독했다. 1자는 일부 글자 획을 제시했다. 44자는 전체 자형을 제시했는데, 2-9-8ㆍ9자(官軍), 2-9-30자(還), 2-9-34자(監), 2-10-22자(改), 2-10-35자(津) 등 6글자는 새로운 판독안을 제시했다.
그리고 논란이 분분한 여러 글자는 글자 획과 균열선을 구분하고 자형을 제시하여 통설적 판독안의 기반을 마련하였다. 이와 같은 판독 성과가 앞으로 광개토왕릉비 나아가 고구려사 연구에 크게 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The Tomb Monument of King Gwanggaeto(광개토왕릉비) is the most important epigraph in the study of Goguryeo history. But the monument has been worn out a lot, and controversy is still divided over the reading. Previously, researchers mainly read individual characters. Accordingly, various views were raised on the reading because each researcher had different criteria for discriminating the form of letters and the criteria for distinguishing between character strokes and crack lines.
I proceeded with the reading considering the aspect of cracks and flakes on the monument. I took the sections of cracks and flakes as unit, not individual letters, and then proceeded with the reading considering the direction of the crack line and the degree of abrasion. However, due to the large volume, only the first and second sides were read in this paper, and the third and fourth sides were covered in other papers.
In the first side, 43 characters were reviewed. Among them, 32 characters were read, excluding 11 characters with severe abrasion. The three characters were read through the context before and after because there were no traces of character strokes left. The two characters presented only a few strokes. Twenty-seven characters presented the entire form of letters, while 1-10-31 character(國) presented a new reading view.
In the second side, 54 characters were reviewed. Among them, 48 characters were read, excluding 6 characters with severe abrasion. The three characters were read through the context before and after because there were no traces of character strokes left. The one characters presented only a few strokes. Forty-four characters presented the entire letter form, and six characters of them, including 2-9-8ㆍ9 characters(官軍), 2-9-30 character(還), 2-9-34 character(監), 2-10-22 character(改), and 2-10-35character(津), presented a new reading view.
In addition, several characters with controversy divided into character strokes and crack lines and presented the form of letters to lay the foundation for a conventional reading opinion. It is hoped that the above reading results will greatly contribute to the study of Gwanggaeto Royal Tomb Monument and Goguryeo history in the future.
