사설시조에 나타난 ‘장애’의 一面 (A Study on the Aspects of Disability in Saseolsijo)

초록

본 연구는 그간 이 방면 연구에서 관심이 일천했던 사설시조 속 ‘장애’의 다양한 흔적들을 추적해 보고 그 속에 담긴 문화론적 의미망들을 한번 살펴보고자 한 것이다. ‘장애’가 보통 신체적, 정신적 장애를 지닌 불구자라는, 근대 이후에 형성된 오늘날의 개념과는 달리, 전통 사회에서는 不能自存者와 不能自活者(삼국), 독질자, 폐질자, 잔질자 등 구체적인 질병으로 인한 것(고려), 선천적, 후천적 불편함을 지니고 있거나 신체적으로 미성숙한 인물인 不成人(조선) 등 보다 광범위하였다.
이러한 전통 사회의 장애 개념 속에서, 사설시조를 보면 그 수가 그리 많지는 않지만, 크게 4가지의 양상이 나타남을 볼 수 있다. 배척과 배제, 공감과 포용, 비현실 속 현실성 강화를 위한 수단, 권력의 허상을 폭로하는 수단으로서의 장애 像들이 바로 그것이다.
먼저 장애가 배척과 배제의 대상이 되는 경우는, 대체로 無鼻者와 곰보를 향한 감각적인 혐오 속에서 제시되는데, 불완전한 이들의 몸은 전쟁의 傷痕이 아로새겨진 것이거나 당대 만연하던 질병의 흔적들이며, 특히 후자의 경우는 실제 연행 현장에서 유희를 더해 주는 소재로서 활용됨을 볼 수 있다. 한편, 공감과 포용 대상으로서의 장애는, 정상인의 삶 속에 포용되려는 인간적 욕망이 반영된 것으로, 장애인 스스로의 자발적 노력에 의한 것과 타자에 의한 것이 있고, 대체로 보편성과 집단적 공감대를 형성한다는 공통점이 있다. 장애가 비현실 속 현실을 강화하는 수단일 경우에는 그로테스크와 연결되어 규범어를 뒤집은 반언어를 창출함으로써 웃음 미학을 드러내는 동시에 현실계의 모순을 극대화하고 당대의 부조리함을 철저히 까발리기도 한다. 이 외에도, 사설시조에는 장애가 권력의 허상을 폭로하는 수단으로 사용되기도 하는데, 주로 신분 권력 및 남녀 간의 性 권력에서 오는 가부장제의 부당함과 절대 권력의 허상 등을 폭로하는 면을 보인다. 특히, 후자의 경우는 그간 중심으로 간주된 남성의 육체(온전한 몸)에 대한 온전치 못한 주변인들의 저항이라는 점에서 주목된다.
이처럼 ‘장애’는 단순히 신체적, 정신적 불구라는 1차원적인 의미나 기능을 넘어서 당대 중심-주변 권력의 미학적 긴장 속에서 변화되어 가던 이행기 시대의 한 像을 보여주고 있었다는 점에서 그 의미가 있다. 장애가 ‘극복되어야 할 그 무엇이 아니라 지속되는 것’이라면, 극복 대상으로서 장애를 보는 시선들과 지속 대상으로 장애를 보는 시선들 간에 어울리고 부딪치는 흔적을 찾는 것은 고전시가 연구에서 장애문화사를 구축해 보는 토대로서 그 의미가 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to discover the characteristics and aspects of disability in Saseolsijo and its cultural implications. “Disability” in Korean Classical Poetry has not been focused on by many scholars until now, even though it is very important in that it’s related to the power, aesthetics of grotesque, etc. This paper basically started with this problematic recognition and can be summarized as follows.
Unlike the current concept of 'disability', which is normal physical and mental disabilities, in a traditional society, it was extensive such as ‘not self-survivors’(Three Kingdoms era), disability by specific illnesses such as serious sicknesses(Goryeo Dynasty) and ‘non-adults’ who were born or had discomfort during their lifetime or who were physically immature(Choseon Dynasty). With this traditional concept of disability, 15 works in Saseolsijo are discovered and shown 4 types of disabilities, Rejection and exclusion, sympathy and inclusion, means for strengthening reality in unreality and obstacles as means of exposing the illusion of power.
First, the cases in which obstacles are subject to exclusion is usually presented in biological dislike towards people that have no nose or pockmark. The body of incomplete ones are traces of wounds of war or traces of contagious diseases, especially in the latter case, it can be seen that it is used as a material to add amusement to the actual performing situation. On the other hand, disability as sympathy and inclusion object reflects the human desire to be embraced in the life of the normal person and generally has universality and collective consensus.
When obstacles are a means to reinforce the reality in unreality, they reveal the laughing aesthetics by creating the language that reverses the normative word in the text in connection with grotesques. At the same time, it maximizes the contradictions of the real world and thoroughly exposes the absurdity of the time. In addition, a disability is often used as a means of exposing the illusion of power. It is manifest in revealing the identity of power and the unfairness of patriarchal power coming from sexual power between men and women and the illusion of absolute power. In particular, the latter case is noticed in that it is the resistance of the flesh of the male, which is regarded as the center, by the surrounding people.
Thus, 'disability' is meaningful in that it showed an image of the contemporary age that has been changed in the aesthetic tension of the center-periphery power. This research is meaningful as the foundation to build the history of disability culture in the study of classical poetry.
