초록

본고는 조해일의 중편소설 「아메리카」에 나타난 미국 이미지가 ‘신식민주의적 아메리카니즘’의 이면(裏面)으로 적나라하게 표출되고 있음을 분석하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 작가는 이 작품에서 남한을 신식민지적 구조로 재편하고 있는 미국의 이미지를 날카롭게 해부하고 있는데, 이는 막강한 경제력(군사력)과 자유민주주의 이념을 바탕으로 식민지 국민의 자발적인 승인과 합의를 이끌어내는 미국의 신식민주의적 본질을 폭로하는 작업과 무관하지 않다. 작가는 친미와 반미의 이분법 너머를 응시하고 있는데, 이른바 미국이라는 이미지 속에 투영된 합리주의적 사고방식 혹은 자유민주주의라는 보편가치의 이면을 생생하게 폭로하고 있는 것이다.
본고는 지식인 관찰자의 시선에 포착된 미국의 양면적 표상을 구체적으로 분석하였다. 관찰자의 시선은 처음에는 기지촌 외부인의 관점에서 ㄷ시와 ㅂ리의 풍경을 바라본다. 즉 클럽 문지기로서 기지촌 여성과 미군들의 뒤섞인 춤을 응시하면서 아름답고 황홀한 외양만을 피상적으로 바라볼 뿐이다. 하지만 이후 기지촌 여성들과 성관계를 맺고 그들과 대화를 하는 등 일상을 반복하는 생활인의 모습이 누적되면서 관찰자적 인식이 변화하게 된다. 특히 미군이 기지촌에서 벌이는 일련의 사건을 경험하면서 이방인이었던 자신이 ‘기지촌 여성의 이웃이자 동료’임을 확인한다. 나아가 자신과 기지촌 여성들이 한국인이라는 민족감정의 외연을 공통분모로 확인하는 동류의식을 지닌 존재임을 인식한다. 그 과정은 ‘신식민주의적 아메리카니즘’이 표방하는 현상과 본질적 이면을 함께 들여다보는 작업의 소산이다.

영어초록

This research aimed at analyzing the point that the image of America in Jo, hae-il’s medium-length story, 「America」 is frankly expressed in the inside(裏面) of ‘neocolonial Americanism’. The writer keenly analyzed the image of America which reorganized South Korea as neocolonial structure in this work, with is not unrelated to the work to expose the essence neocolonialism of America which draws spontaneous approval and agreement of colonial people based on powerful economic power(military power) and the idea of liberal democracy. The writer stared at over the dichotomy between pro-America and anti-America, which is to vividly expose the inside of universal value of so-called rational way of thinking reflected in the image of America or liberal democracy.
This research concretely analyzed the ambivalent symbol of America caught by the sight of the intellectual observer. The observer’s sight at first sees the landscape of d-si and b-ri from the viewpoint of the outsider of military camp town. That is, only to see the beautiful and charming appearance superficially while looking the dance mixed with the women of military camp town and the American soldiers as the gatekeeper of a club. However, as the nature of living character was cumulated, who repeated daily life such as having sex with the women of military camp town and talking with them, etc. since then, observational awareness changed. Particularly, while experiencing a series of the incidents which the American soldiers caused at the military camp town, he felt certain that he was the neighbor and the colleague of the women of military camp town’, who had been a stranger. Furthermore, he recognized that he and the women of military camp town were the existence who had consciousness of kind to identify the extension of the race feeling as Korean as common denominator. That process is the process of work to look into the phenomenon which ‘neocolonial Americanism’ claimed and the essential inside together. This shows contemporariness and nowness of Jo, hae-il’s literature, in respect that it is a still currently effective work. Therefore, Jo, hae-il’s literature belongs to the asset of our national literature which needs to be more closely and minutely investigated.
