초록

이 글은 범부 김정설이 밝히는 한국전통음악의 멋에 대해 전개하였다. 이를 위해 범부의 저술 속에 나타난 그의 ‘멋’에 대한 관점과 우리나라 역사 속에서 한국전통음악이 어떻게 전승되었고, 그 위치가 어떻게 전개되었는지를 통해 한국전통음악의 중요성을 이해할 수 있다.
범부는 『화랑외사』에서 ‘풍류’가 현재 한국인이 사용하는 ‘멋’이라는 말과 동일함을 피력함으로써 ‘풍류’를 현재의 ‘멋’이라는 활어(活語)로 재탄생 시켰다. 멋의 본질이 시간이 지나 현재까지 오면서 왜곡되거나 어긋나 있으므로 현재에 통용되는 ‘설 멋’과 ‘제 멋’, ‘참 멋’을 언급함으로써 원래의 멋인 ‘참 멋’에 대한 강조로 설명하였다. 그는 『화랑외사』에서 ‘참 멋’을 지닌 역사적 인물 중 사다함(斯多含)과 김유신(金庾信)을 통해 유교･불교･도교를 아우르는 고유한 한국적 멋, 풍류도의 정체를 설명하기도 하였다.
범부는 전통을 논함에 있어 현재에도 살아있는 전통으로 계승되어야 하는데, 그 표본을 한국전통음악의 연주형태를 통해 설명했다. 이러한 한국 전통음악 전승의 특징은 연주자가 곧 작곡가의 역할을 했기 때문인데, 여기에는 연주자의 감흥에 따라 새로 작곡해가면서 연주하는 특성이 있기 때문이다. 한국전통음악의 특성은 우리민족의 생리화된 음악전승방법, 일종의 독특한 한국음악인의 성격이면서 특별한 생리를 담지하고 있다.
더불어 범부는 신라 화랑의 정신요소 중 예술적 요소로서 가장 중요하게 여긴 것을 음악으로 보았고, 음악이 화랑에게만 중요했던 것이 아니라, 신라 역사 속에서 음악과 음악인의 중요성은 여러 가지 증거와 현상들로 설명했다. 그러므로 음악의 중요성과 상징성은 국민성 또는 그 시대성, 풍토성(風土性), 그 시대의 사회적 성격에서 연원한 것이며, 신라에서 그 핵심은 바로 풍류도에서 연원했음을 강조한 것이다. 신라역사에서 음악과 음악인들의 사회적 위치와 중요성은 풍류정신, 곧 ‘멋’에서 기인한 것이고, 범부는 『화랑외사』나 『풍류정신』에 이를 자세히 연출하였다.
범부가 밝히는 한국전통음악의 멋은 그가 남긴 자료를 통해 몇 가지로 정리할 수 있었는데, 여기에는 한국전통음악을 연주하는 물계자와 백결선생을 통해 주로 파악할 수 있다. 범부가 밝히는 한국전통음악의 멋은 ‘제 빛깔’과 ‘제 길수’의 멋이다. ‘제 빛깔’이라는 것은 사람에게 누구나 있지만 ‘제 빛깔’을 잃은 사람은 아무것도 이룰 수 없다. 잘났거나 못났거나 ‘제 빛깔’을 지닌 사람은 ‘제 길수’를 찾게 되며, ‘제 길수’는 자연(自然)의 묘리(妙理), 즉 자연적으로 알게 되는 이치를 말한다. 또 한국전통음악의 또 다른 멋은 해학적, 즉흥적인 멋이다. 범부의 『화랑외사』에서의 물계자와 백결선생의 해학성은 말 그대로 음악을 통해 웃음 짓게 하는 재미와 익살적 표현이 용해되어 있으며, 더불어 곳곳에 나타나는 즉흥연주 연출은 한국전통음악의 대표적 멋으로 잘 표현되어 있다.

영어초록

This article developed the 'Meot'(멋) in Korean traditional music revealed by the Beombu Kim Jeong-seol. To this end, I was able to understand the importance of traditional Korean music through the perspective of the 'Meot' in his writings and how Korean traditional music was transmitted and developed the 'Meot' in Korean history.
Beombu recreated 'Pungryu'(風流) as the current live style of 'Meot' by demonstrating that 'Pungryu' as the same as the word 'Meot' used by Koreans in 『Hwarang-oesa(花郞外史)』. Since the essence of 'Meot' has been distorted or misaligned as time passes and it has come to the present, it was explained with emphasis on the original style, ‘Seol Meot'(설 멋), ‘Jae Meot'(제 멋), and ‘Cham Meot’(참 멋). He also explained the identity of Pungryudo(風流道) as a unique Meot that encompasses Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, through Sada-hham (斯多含) and Kim Yu-shin (金庾信) among historical figures with ‘tCham Meot’ in 『Hwarang-oesa』.
In discussing traditions, the general public should be inherited as a living tradition even today, and the sample was explained through the performance form of Korean traditional music. This characteristic of traditional Korean music transmission is because the performer played the role of a composer, and this is because there is a characteristic of playing while composing a new composition according to the inspiration of the performer. The characteristics of Korean traditional music include the physiologically transmitted method of music of our people, a kind of unique character of Korean musicians, and a special physiology.
In addition, the general public viewed music as the most important artistic element among the spiritual elements of the Shilla dynasty Hwarang group, and the importance of music and musicians in the history of Silla was explained by various evidences and phenomena. Therefore, the importance and symbolism of music derives from the national character or the characteristics of the times, the climate, and the social characteristics of the time, and it is emphasized that the core of the music is from Pungryudo in Silla. The social position and importance of music and musicians in the history of Silla stemmed from the spirit of Pungryu, that is, ‘Meot’, and the general public produced this in detail in 『Hwarang-oiseo』 and 『Pungryu Jeong-shin(Spirit)』.
The style of Korean traditional music revealed by the Beombu could be summarized in several ways through the materials he left behind, and this can be mainly understood through Mulgyeja(Name of musician) and Baek-Gyeol, who play traditional Korean music. The Meot of traditional Korean music revealed by ordinary people is the Meot of ‘my color’ and ‘my way’. “My color” is something everyone has, but a person who has lost “my color” cannot achieve anything. A person who is good or bad, or who has ‘one’s own color’, will find ‘one’s way’, and ‘one’s way’ refers to the secret of nature, that is, the way to know naturally. Another Meot of Korean traditional music is humorous and improvised. The humor of teacher Mulgyeja and Baek-Gyeol in 『Hwarang-oesa』 of the Beombu literally melts the fun and humorous expressions that make people laugh through the music. is well expressed.
