제품디자인 적용을 위한 공학적 임바디먼트 디자인 단계의 특성 (Attributes of Embodiment Design Procedures in Engineering Design Process to Apply in Product Design)

초록

일반적으로 제품은 대량 생산을 통한 대량 소비와 사용을 전제로 개발된다. 따라서 새로운 제품을 개발하는 과정은 체계적으로 진행될 필요가 있으며, 모든 과정의 진행에 있어 효율적인 관리도 필요하다. 제품을 개발하는 이러한 과정은 결과적으로 문제해결과정의 연속이다. 시장의 요구나 아이디어를 하나의 문제로 명시하여 이 문제를 체계적으로 해결해가는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 공학적 영역에서는 ‘공학설계과정’이라고 부른다. 본 연구는 이러한 공학적 설계과정 중 한 부분인 ‘임바디먼트 디자인’ 과정을 고찰하여 제품디자인 영역의 사례와 비교하고, 그에 따른 시사점을 찾는데 그 목적이 있다. 따라서 연구를 위한 이론적 고찰에서는 먼저 공학적 설계방법론의 대표적 모델인 독일의 ‘Pahl/Beitz 모델’과 영국의 ‘BS7000 모델’을 전체적으로 비교 및 분석하였다, 이어서 각 모델들이 공통적으로 포함하고 있는 ‘임바디먼트 디자인’ 과정을 심도 있게 살피고, 이를 제품디자인 영역에서의 사례와도 비교하였다. 연구의 결과 공학적 임바디먼트 디자인 과정에서의 핵심 절차는 ‘프로덕트 아키텍처’의 결정과 ‘파라메트릭 디자인’의 수행으로 도출되었다. 그러나 이러한 두 절차들은 제품디자인 영역에서도 이미 중요한 절차로 인식되어 수행되고 있었는데, 이는 기술적 제품의 개발에 있어 동시공학적 접근을 통한 제품 개발의 경향이 일반화되었기 때문이다. 그러나 제품의 디자인에는 공학적 측면에서의 변수 외에도 기능이나 재료, 형상 및 양산 등 더욱 다양한 디자인적 변수들이 존재한다. 따라서 후속적으로 진행될 연구에서는 이러한 제품디자인 영역의 특성을 반영한, 디자인 관점에서의 임바디먼트 디자인 과정에 대한 연구가 더욱 심도 있게 진행되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

In general, a product is developed for a mass consumption and utilization through mass production. For this reason, development of a new product needs a systematic process, and the process itself also needs to be managed efficiently from end to end. Such product development process is, in the end, a series of problem-solving activities since it is essentially about establishing a market demand or idea as a problem and then solving it systematically. This process, in the field of engineering, is called “engineering design process.” This research is to study the embodiment design phase of the engineering design process, to compare it with product design cases, and to finally find meaningful implications. With this objective in mind, Germany’s Pahl/Beitz model and UK’s BS7000 model, the two most representative engineering design methodologies, were first compared and analyzed in order to study the theory of the engineering design process. After that, the embodiment design phase, which is included in both of the models, was studied in depth before comparing it with some cases in product design area. This research found that the core tasks to be done during the embodiment design phase in engineering design process are determining the product architecture and executing parametric design. Nevertheless, these two tasks are already appreciated as important steps to take in product design also. That is because the trend of approaching technological product development with concurrent engineering has become a common practice. In production design, however, there are quite a number of variables related to design elements such as functionality, material, shape, or mass production that exist in addition to engineering-related variables. Hence, an in-depth study on embodiment design concept from a design perspective that reflects such attributes of product design area needs to follow.
