초록

산업디자인은 일상생활을 대상으로 하는 것이 특징이지만 특정 상황에서 디자인 행위의 역할과 그에 따른 디자인 형태를 알아보기로 하였다. 특정 상황은 미국 서부 네바다 주에서 열리는 8일간의 축제인 버닝맨이며 이곳에서 지내는 동안 사람들이 이용하는 운송수단에 주목하였다. 상황에 따라 디자인된 사물을 파악하여 디자인 방법과 과정적인 면에서 사용자와 디자이너의 또 다른 측면의 역할을 발견할 수 있을 것이라 보았기 때문이다. 이로써 버닝맨 축제의 특징을 산업디자인의 관점으로 파악하고 그것의 키워드를 인지하는 것이 우선시 되었으며, 버닝맨 축제의 운송수단을 만들고 사용하는 사람들의 특징(버닝맨)을 분석하고 산업디자인과 버닝맨 축제의 특징을 비교하였다. 그것으로 축제의 상황이 산업디자인의 일상생활에 관련된 일반적인 측면은 아니지만, 독특한 문화로써 창조적인 디자인 사물이 유발되는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 산업디자인의 사용자와 버닝맨 운송수단의 창조자이며 사용자의 중간적 역할을 하는 것을 비교하고 운송수단의 사례를 분석, 해석함으로써 특정 제품을 통하여 사용자의 행동이나 타인과의 상호작용이 이루어지며 제품을 디자인하는 것에 감성적 의미와 목표가 포함된 유사한 부분을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 산업디자인의 일상적인 범위에서 벗어나 제품의 대량생산과 시장의 흐름과 경향에 따라 디자인되는 일반적인 상황은 아니지만 문화가 형성되는 것으로 버닝맨 축제 속 의 디자인 행위와 운송수단의 사례를 이해한다. 따라서 새로운 창조적인 디자인과 디자이너와 사용자의 중립적인 협업적 측면을 발견하고 디자인의 또 다른 콘셉트 경향의 요소를 밝혀내는 것에 의미가 있겠다.

영어초록

Industrial design mainly involves our daily lives; however, this study explores roles of design activities and various types of design in certain contexts. The specific situation is Burning Man Festival which was held in Nevada State, a western part of U.S.A., for eight days and transportation means are focused which were used by the people who were staying there during that time because it is regarded to find out user's and designer's roles at another aspect from the design methods and its processes, by understanding the things whose designs were made according to the situation. By doing that, it is given a priority to understand characteristics of Burning Man Festival from the aspect of industrial design and to recognize its key word. Characteristics of the people (Burning Man) who made transportation means for that festival and used them are also analyzed and industrial design and characteristics of that festival are also compared. By doing that, it could be found out that the situation of the festival doesn't have a general aspect related to everyday life for industrial design but it motivates the things to have creative design as a unique culture. Also, comparing the roles of users for industrial design and creators of the transportation means at Burning Man Festival, and in-between roles for users, analyzing and interpreting the cases for transportation means, it could be found out that user's behavior or interaction with others are made through a specific product, and a similar part where emotional meanings and aims are included in the product design. This study understands the design behavior at Burning Man Festival and cases for transporta tion means, which is not a general situation where a design is made according to mass production of products, flow of the market and its tendency, which is beyond the ordinary range of industrial design, but in which culture is formed. Accordingly, this study is significant because it has found the new creative design and designer's and user's neutral cooperative aspect and also it finds out elements of tendency for another concept for the design.
