초록

본 논문은 김남천의 「제퇴선」, 「처를 때리고」, 「경영」, 「맥」을 중심으로 전향자들의 현실대응 양상에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 김남천은 1937년에서 1941년에 이르는 기간 동안에 작가의 문학적 실천으로서의 방법론을 모색하였다. 이때 창작방법론의 탐구와 작품창작을 위해 그가 의도한 것은 새로운 프로문학의 방향성 제시에 있다. 일제의 강압에 의해 카프가 해산되고 사회주의 문학활동이 비합법적인 상황에서 프로문학의 방향성 정립과 프로문학이 안고 있던 관념적 도식주의의 극복은 그에게 있어 중요한 과제였을 것이다. 김남천은 사상운동을 지속할 수 없게 된 전향의 시대를 맞이하여 전향한 사회주의자들을 주인공으로 소설을 쓰면서 당대 이념을 형상화한다. 「제퇴선」, 「처를 때리고」, 「경영」, 「맥」 등의 소설에는 일본 제국주의 시대에 전향한 지식인들의 현실인식과 그 대응양상이 잘 드러나고 있다.
먼저 「제퇴선」, 「처를 때리고」에서는 전향자의 자기 고발 문제와 현실 적응의 좌절이 그려지고 있다. 김남천은 전향자들의 내적․ 외적 갈등을 통하여 그들의 사상이 억압된 형태로 내면화되어 있다는 것을 드러내고 있다. 「경영」, 「맥」의 연작은 전향소설 중에 유일하게 중편 형식을 취하고 있으며, 전향문제를 사상적 측면에서 다루고 있다. 「제퇴선」과 「처를 때리고」가 전향자의 현실복귀 문제를 다루었다면, 「경영」, 「맥」은 이미 전향이 수용된 상태에서 전향자의 이념을 중심으로 작품을 형상화하고 있다. 대부분의 전향소설이 전향의 과정이나 전향자의 삶의 양태를 드러낸다고 볼 때, 「경영」, 「맥」은 사상문제를 중핵으로 서사를 구축해나간다는 점에서 발전적이라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 김남천은 제국주의 체제 아래서 지식인들의 삶의 태도가 어떠한지 그 현실대응 방법을 다양한 작품을 통해 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

Suppression of ideas and thoughts by Japan and the issues related to the KAPF dispersion and conversion in the mid-1930s significantly influenced on professional writers and other artists. Kim Nam-cheon, who was a politician and writer, actively participated in literature activities in the late 1930s. In this period, he published more than 80 criticisms and about 40 novels. He embodied ideology of the times by writing novels with the heroes of converted socialists in the era of conversion. His novels such as 「Jetoiseon」, 「The Battered Wife」, 「Gyeongyeong」, and 「Maek」properly express converts recognition of the reality and attitude of coping with it in the times of Japanese nationalism.
First of all, in 「Jetoiseon」 and 「The Battered Wife」, he expressed self-satirizing issues of converts and their frustration at adaptation to the reality. Through the hero of 「Jetoiseon」, ‘Park Gyeong-ho’ and the hero of 「The Battered Wife」, ‘Cha Nam-su’, Kim Nam-cheon described the psychology and actions of converts who were put behind the bars as ideological offenders in detail. In 「The Battered Wife」, through the hero ‘Cha Nam-su’, he realistically described the selfish and self-regarding way of life and snobbish human relations of converts.
The series of 「Gyeongyeong」, and 「Maek」 are the only novellas among the novels of conversion, covering the issues of conversion in terms of ideology. Whereas 「Jetoiseon」 and 「The Battered Wife」 dealt with the converts issues of returning to the reality, 「Gyeongyeong」, and 「Maek」 embodied their ideology when conversion is already completed. Considering that most of conversion novels reveal conversion process or life styles of converts, 「Gyeongyeong」, and 「Maek」 can be considered evolutive because they concentrate on describing the ideological issues.
Kim Nam-cheon showed intellectuals' life attitude of coping with the reality under imperialism using various characters. In his novels such as 「Jetoiseon」, 「The Battered Wife」, 「Gyeongyeong」, and 「Maek」, converts focus on how they are going to adapt to the reality or internalization of ideology, instead of being proud of being put behind the bars because of their ideology. However, under Japanese nationalism, the limitations of his novels are that life attitude of converts could not advance towards the national level but stays at the personal level.
