漢文脈의 이미저리, 『大韓民報』(1909∼1910) 漫評의 알레고리 읽기 - 1909년 연재분을 중심으로 (The Imagery of the Sinographic Context, a Allegoric Reading of the Satirical Cartoons of Daehanminbo(大韓民報)(1909∼1010) ― Focusing on the 1909 series)

초록

나는 이 글에서 그간 기념될 뿐 그 전체상이 드러난 적이 없었던 『대한민보』(1909.6∼1910.10: 총 375호) 소재 신문 만평을 1909년 연재분을 중심으로 전체적으로 해제하고 그 주된 창작 배경과 방법, 경향을 일별하였다. 연구방법으로는 일차적으로 신문의 전체 기사 속에서 만평의 맥락을 재구성하는 모자이크 잇기 방법을 취하였으며, 이것만으로만은 파악될 수 없는 만평의 의도나 의미를 파악하기 위해 만평과 당대의 정치사회상을 暗喩의 관계로 파악하는 알레고리적 읽기를 시도했다. 이를 통해 다종한 언어로 기입되고 다양한 사물 묘사에 가탁된 만평의 성격을대략 다섯 가지의 경향—당대 상황에 관한 우의도, 당시 정치를 풍자한 인간사의 알레고리, 복자화된 문자를 통한 인물 풍자, 정물과 풍경에 의탁된 당대 정치사회적사건들에 대한 자연사의 알레고리, 각종 기념일 관련 휘호, 휘장—으로 대별하였다.
이 만평은 한문 및 書畵의 전통적 표현 체계와 근대 미디어의 신양식, 고유어 표현이 절합됨으로써 산출된 것이었다. 만평 분석의 결과가 보여주는 바, 한문과 이를둘러싼 컨텍스트—소위 漢文脈의 문제란 결코 서기체계 변화라는 관점만으로는 파악될 수 없다. 이 글이 그간 언어 문제로 국한되어 온 한문의 문제를 표현, 상상의방법, 세계관, 비판정신의 제 요소를 포함하는 표상 체계 전반에 대한 검토를 촉구하는 문제제기로 읽히기를 기대한다.

영어초록

In this paper, satirical cartoons in the 1909 series of Daehanminbo (Korean Daily Newspaper, 1909.6∼1910.10: 375days) were analyzed to reveal the background, methods, and disposition of the work. This work will be of great interest to the field given that the overall imagery of Daehanminbo has never been studied and this newspaper has only received commemoration until now. First, reorganization of the contexts of the cartoons was attempted after connecting each satires introduced in all the volumes in 1909 (I refer this method as the ‘mosaic joint seaming’ method).
To fully understand the intention and meaning of the cartoons, an allegorical method was attempted where the relationship between the social historical context of when each volume was released and the corresponding cartoon was studied in a metaphoric manner. The characteristics of the satirical cartoons listed in Daehanminbo were grouped into four different styles of sarcasm: Reflection of the social historical context of that era, specific criticism on politics, mocking of individuals by utilizing modified movable types during printing, and usages of the traditional landscape painting and standstill painting to represent specific political and social events. The satirical cartoons were the result of articulating the traditional representation system of the Sinographic context and Eastern Paintings, the new patterns of modern media, and the vernacular languages. The results suggest that the issues related to the Sinographic context cannot solely be interpreted as changes in the writing system: how the characters were scribed in a specific manner. This paper hopes to facilitate re-interpretation of the problems in Chinese Characters or Sinographic context, which has been solely treated as a language issue, to include the representation system that covers the method of expression, the method of imagination, worldview, and critical mind.
